NOAA MILESTONES IN HAWAI‘I AND THE PACIFIC



April is Tsunami Awareness Month in Hawaii. Do you know the natural warning signs for a Tsunami? Do you know what to do if a tsunami warning is issued? Does your family have an emergency plan? Tsunami preparedness information will be made available at the following events:

Tsunami Awareness Month Kick-off – Education & Media Event

Monday, March 22, 2010, 9 – 10:30 a.m.

Ka Waihona o ka Na`auao Public Charter School, 89195 Farrington Highway, Nanakuli

Lt. Gov. Duke Aiona will present a proclamation announcing Tsunami Awareness Month in Hawaii, followed by a tsunami awareness and safety presentation to students, teachers, and parents. Afterwards, experts will meet with the safety committee to advise on school evacuation plan. Sponsors: NOAA, Hawaii State Civil Defense.

Announcement of Maui Tsunami Inundation Mapping Project

Monday, March 22, 2010, 9 a.m.

Maui County Council, Kahului

U.H. researcher, Dr. Kwok Fai Cheung, along with Hawaii State Civil Defense will give a presentation on plans to update tsunami inundation zone maps.

Statewide Tsunami Communications Test

Wednesday, March 24, 7 a.m. – 12 Noon. In conjunction with similar exercises in the Atlantic, Gulf, West Coast states, and Pacific Island nations. Sponsors: NOAA and Hawaii State Civil Defense. (No public involvement.)

Bishop Museum Planetarium Lobby

The program will focus on the Chilean tsunami. Lectures will be dramatically illustrated by images projected on Science on a Sphere, a 6-ft. fiberglass globe suspended from the ceiling. New Spherecast technology will link to all participating networked spheres, allowing for audiences in multiple locations to visualize animations of the planet together virtually. Speakers: PTWC Geophysicist, Gerard Fryer, Bishop Museum’s Leon Geschwind, and NOAA Pacific Services Center’s Matt McBride.
