1. NEOLITHIC REVOLUTION (p. 7)

Brainstorm main ideas of section:

• “New Stone Age”

• Better tools & methods for making tools

• Specialization-special tasks, jobs for people

• Mud-brick housing developed w/plaster walls

• Shrines to mother goddess

• Crops & animal herds developed & domesticated

• Farming developed & settlements grew as well as population

Summary statement for Cornell notes:

The Neolithic Rev. aka “new stone age” was a period of time in which technology advanced in better tool-making. Farming developed & humans settled in one place and abandoned the nomadic hunting-gathering lifestyle resulting in a complex civilization

2. SOCIAL ORGANIZATION (p. 9-10)

Brainstorm – main ideas of section

• Family units developed

• Totems use to identify clans, groups of people.

• Gov’t had democratic characteristics.

• People divided into family, extended family, clans, tribes.

• Animism – belief that life exists in everything in nature including inanimate objects.

• Belief in mother goddess.

Summary Statement – Cornell notes:

The Social organization of early man was organized into family units and developed into extended Family, clans and tribes with their own totems. Their belief system included a mother goddess and was animistic. They elected older males to govern the group.
