I. INTRODUCTION

Dragon NaturallySpeaking lets you talk to your computer instead of typing. As you talk, your words are transcribed onto your screen and into your documents or e-mail messages.

Talking to a computer while it types what you say is called dictating. You can dictate into Microsoft® Word, Corel® WordPerfect®, e-mail programs, personal information organizers, and virtually any other program in which you normally type

Starting Dragon NaturallySpeaking 7

1. Click on the START BUTTON.

2. Click on ALL PROGRAMS.

3. Click on Dragon NaturallySpeaking7.0.

4. Select your name from the user list.

5. Click on OPEN.

II. USING DRAGON NATURALLYSPEAKING 7

STARTING TO DICTATE

Follow these steps when you want to dictate.

To start to dictate:

• Make sure the program you want to dictate into is running.

• Put on the microphone and position it correctly.

• Click in the program you want to dictate into to make that window active.

• Turn on the microphone.

• Start talking and watch your words appear on the screen.

CONTROLLING THE MICROPHONE

You can turn the microphone on and off with the mouse or keyboard. You can turn the microphone off or make it stop listening temporarily by using your voice.

To turn the microphone on an off:

Do one of the following:

• Press the plus key (+) on the numeric keypad.

• Click the microphone button on the DragonBar.

• Click the microphone icon in the Windows taskbar.

To make the microphone stop listening temporarily:

Say "Go to Sleep" or "Stop Listening."

Dragon NaturallySpeaking ignores everything except the "Wake Up" or "Listen to me" commands

To reactivate the microphone, say "Wake Up" or "Listen to me."

Note:

If you use the built-in switch to turn a handheld microphone on and off, wait a few seconds after you turn the microphone on before you start dictating. This ensures that Dragon NaturallySpeaking recognizes the first thing you say.

SPEAKING CLEARLY

Speaking clearly is one of the most important and easiest things you can do to improve recognition accuracy. If you enunciate your words, Dragon NaturallySpeaking is much more likely to recognize them correctly.

For optimal speech recognition:

Speak continuously and enunciate each and every word.

Speak in long phrases rather than in short phrases or individual words.

Speak at your normal speed.

Do not mumble or slur your words.

Try not to say "um" or "uh." Pause silently instead.

USING THE DRAGONBAR

The DragonBar

The DragonBar is a special toolbar that appears at the top of your screen when you start Dragon NaturallySpeaking for the first time. When you see the DragonBar, you can use Dragon NaturallySpeaking to dictate into word processors, e-mail, and other programs. You can change the appearance and behavior of the DragonBar to suit your working style. Click Related Topics below for instructions on how to change the DragonBar's mode. The DragonBar contains the following parts, starting from the left side:

The Dragon Icon

Click the Dragon icon (or right-click anywhere on the DragonBar) to display a menu that controls how the DragonBar looks and acts on your screen.

The Microphone Icon and Volume Display

Click the microphone icon to turn the microphone on and off. When the icon is red and horizontal, the microphone is off. When the icon appears green and vertical, the microphone is on and the program is ready for you to dictate. The volume display indicates how well the program is hearing your voice.

The Menus

The menus on the DragonBar contain the commands you can use while working in Dragon NaturallySpeaking. Note that some of these commands have duplicate functions available from other parts of the DragonBar, for example, playing back dictation.

Message area

To the right of the menus is a box where messages display the current status of Dragon NaturallySpeaking, such as whether the microphone is on or off, or the current dictation mode. If you turn off the show messages property on the View tab of the Options dialog box, the tools normally seen only on the Extras toolbar are visible to the right of the menus when the Extras toolbar is closed.

Extras Toolbar Icon

Click the icon to display the Extras toolbar, which contains the following features:

Display Correction menu

Click the Correction button to stop playback and correct a mistake.

Playback Toolbar

Contains the following controls that control the playback of dictation:

$ Begin playback

$ Begin Fast Playback

$ Stop playback

$ Skip backward a few words

$ Skip forward a few words

Transcribe button

Click the Transcribe button to open the Transcribe a Recording dialog box, which you use to transcribe recordings of dictation made on portable recorders.

User Name

The name of the current user appears on the Extras toolbar. You can click this name to open the Open User dialog box.

Notes

Unless your computer is equipped with a full-duplex sound card, it's not possible to stop playback by voice, because the computer can't hear speech when it's playing back dictation.

Unless you have Dragon NaturallySpeaking Professional or higher versions, playback is available only until you close a document. After you close a document, Dragon NaturallySpeaking deletes the recorded dictation for that document.

To Change the DragonBar Mode

Click on the Dragon icon on the left side of the DragonBar or right-click anywhere on the DragonBar to open the DragonBar shortcut menu. You can also say "Switch To," "Change To," or "Select," and the name of the mode if you have selected the "Enable Natural Language Commands" option on the Startup/Shutdown tab of the Options dialog box. Click the mode you want. The DragonBar has five modes:

Floating Mode

The DragonBar appears in a window you can drag around the screen.

Docked to Top Mode

The DragonBar always stays at the top of the screen. This is the mode in which the DragonBar appears the first time you start Dragon NaturallySpeaking.

Docked to Bottom Mode

The DragonBar always stays at the bottom of the screen. If the Windows taskbar is visible at the bottom of the screen, the DragonBar appears just above it.

Cling Mode

The DragonBar "clings" to the top left of the active window. When you drag the active window to a new location on your screen, the DragonBar will move with it. In Cling mode, you do not see the Extras toolbar icon.

Tray Icon Only Mode

The DragonBar is not visible on the screen and you do not have access to the NaturallySpeaking menu. Only the microphone icon in the Windows system tray indicates that Dragon NaturallySpeaking is running. To return to the last DragonBar mode, right-click on the microphone icon and click Restore Previous DragonBar Mode.

To Make the DragonBar Always Appear On Top:

Click on the Dragon icon on the left side of the DragonBar or right-click anywhere on the DragonBar to open the DragonBar shortcut menu. You can also say "Make DragonBar Always on Top." On the DragonBar shortcut menu, click Always on Top.

Note

When you set the DragonBar to "Always on top" it will cover secondary Dragon NaturallySpeaking windows, such as the DragonBar and Help screens. In these cases, you will have to turn off the "Always on top" state or move the windows around so that they are not obscured.

You can use "Press Tab Key" to select buttons and "Press Enter Key" to press buttons.

There are five different ways (or modes) that you can display and use the DragonBar. You can also specify whether or not the DragonBar always appears on top of the active window.

USING THE SAMPLE COMMANDS

The Sample Commands window displays a selection of the most useful commands that Dragon NaturallySpeaking recognizes for the current context, whether it is a particular program you are using or the Windows desktop.

To Open the Sample Commands Window:

Say "What Can I Say?" "Display Sample Commands," or "Open Sample Commands." You can also click Sample Commands on the Help menu of the DragonBar.

The Sample Commands window opens, displaying a selection of commands that you can use in the current program.

If you want to see additional commands that are available to you, click Command Browser at the top of the Sample Commands window.

To Close the Sample Commands Window:

Make the sample commands window active if it isn't already. (Say "What Can I Say?" or "Display Sample Commands".

Say "Click Close.”
