Course Description:
This course is the first level of Spanish study and is designed to introduce students to both the Spanish language and culture. Using the Illinois Foreign Language Standards of Communication (written or spoken), Culture (the how, what and why of the new culture and your own), Connections (between other subjects and Spanish), Comparisons (of the Spanish language and culture and your own) and Community (extending use of Spanish beyond the classroom) the aim of this class is to introduce students to the four elements of language study: listening, speaking, reading, and writing studying relevant, real-world theme based units.
Instructional Philosophy:
Many instructional approaches will be used to help all types of learners: Teaching Proficiency through Reading and Storytelling (TPRS), questioning strategies (yes/no, either/on, multiple choice, short answer), Total Physical Response (TPR), reading authentic documents, listening to authentic music, visiting authentic websites and studying authentic films to name a few. Students will be actively engaged and will be expected to participate voluntarily and/or when called upon. Participation does not mean always giving the correct answer but a willingness to try to use Spanish and a genuine attempt at learning the material or asking questions when the material is unclear. The class will be conducted in Spanish and students are expected to communicate in Spanish as well.
Quarter 1:
Grammar study:
1. Students will acquire a vocabulary of approximately 50 Spanish nouns and verb commands. (State Goal 28)
2. Students will study positional adjectives. (State Goal 28)
3. Students will learn the past and present tenses of several key verbs necessary for beginning conversation. (State Goal 28A)
4. Students will study vocabulary related to the weather and time telling. (State Goal 30A)
5. Students will begin to study noun and adjective agreement. (State Goal 28)
6. Students will learn to pronounce Spanish vowels and to order food in a restaurant. (State Goal 30A)
Culture study:
1. Students will study the countries in Central America and Mexico. (State Goal 29E)
2. Students will be introduced to the several children’s songs in Spanish. (State Goal 29B)
3. Students will use a video program called “Mi Vida Loca” to begin to develop listening skills. (State Goals 28A and 29A and C)
Literacy:
1. Students will read articles in the magazine ¿Qué tal? and will give the main idea. (Common Core Literacy standards- College and Career Readiness 1)
2. Students will read the novel “Brandon Brown quiere un perro” and will be able to discuss themes related to the novel in scaffolded Spanish. They will learn to read preterite and imperfect tenses in context and will use them to ask and answer questions. (Common Core Standards- College and Career Readiness 4, H/SS Reading 3)
Goal: Students will reply to questions asked in Spanish with one word answers or repetition.
Quarter 2:
Grammar Study:
1. Students will acquire an additional 50 nouns necessary for communication in the target language. (28)
2. Students will begin to use direct and indirect object pronouns in verb phrases. (28)
3. Students will begin to use acquired structures to perform written tasks. (28D)
4. Students will begin to study the use of the personal a and of demonstrative adjectives. (28)
5. Students will reinforce material learned in the first quarter daily. (28)
Culture Study:
1. Students will continue to study Central America and Mexico. (29E)
2. Students will study some of the music of several latino artists. (29B)
3. Students will study the currency of several Spanish speaking countries. (29A, 30A)
4. Students will study the paintings of several famous Hispanic artists. (29B)
5. Students will study “Botas Picudas” or Mexican pointy boots and the relationship between music and fashion. (29B)
Literacy:
1. Students will read and study the novel Brandon Brown versus Yucatán. (Common Core Standards- College and Career Readiness 4, H/SS Reading 3)
Goals:
1. Students will understand simple stories and will be able to reply to questions with brief, spontaneous sentences.
2. Students will be able to retell stories studied in class both orally and on paper. (Common Core H/SS/S/TS Writing 2a,b,c,d,f)
Quarter 3:
Grammar Study:
1. Students will acquire an additional 50 vocabulary words and will reinforce those previously acquired. (28)
2. Students will continue to use past and present tense verbs with direct and indirect objects. More focus will be placed on plural forms. (28)
3. Students will be introduced to the conditional tense in context. (28)
4. Students will be introduced to the present perfect in context. (28)
5. Students will be expected to do independent reading for homework. (28C)
6. Students will be expected to write regularly to demonstrate proficiency in the language. (28D)
7. Students will be expected to communicate orally on a daily basis. (28B)
Culture Study:
1. Students will study the celebration of the quinceañera. (29A)
2. Students will study the origin of and the performance of the Mambo. (29B)
3. Students will be introduced to the poetry of Pablo Neruda. (29B, 30A Common Core H/SS Reading 3)
4. Students will learn to describe their community and their place in it. (28B)
Literacy Study:
1. Students will read the short novel, El Nuevo Houdini, and will gain experience decoding the new language. They will identify key concepts in each chapter of the book. (Common Core Literacy- College and Career Readiness 1, H/SS/S/TS Reading 1)
Goals:
1. Using familiar vocabulary, students will be able to tell short stories of their own creation. (Common Core Standards- H/SS Writing 4a,b,c,d,e)
2. Students will be able to reply to questions asked in Spanish on familiar topics.
3.Student writing samples will become more detailed as new vocabulary is learned. (Common Core H/SS Writing 10)
Quarter 4:
Grammar Study:
1. Students will be introduced to the present progressive and past perfect tenses.
2. Students will be introduced to the imperfect progressive in context.
Culture Study:
1. Students will study Norteña music. (29B)
2. Students will study the film “La Misma Luna” (29C)
3. Students will study immigration policies and issues. (29E, 30)
4. Guatemala from Civil War to today.
5. Students will study the films El Norte (edited), Living on a dollar
Literacy:
1. Students will read the novel Esperanza. They will study Guatemala and will find a service project related to the novel. (Common Core Literacy- College and Career Readiness 1, H/SS/S/TS Reading 1)
2. Students will analyze how events of the novel develop the theme. (Common Core Standards- College and Career Readiness 2)
Goals:
1. Students will have a confident understanding of the present tense verb forms in context.
2. Students will be able to communicate ideas based on familiar vocabulary with little preparation.
3. Students will write about their feelings about specific topics studied. (Common Core Standards H/SS Writing 4)[pic]
