Summer Enrichment Programs 2011

 

Weekend at Wake Forest: Accounting 3-2-1

Location: Wake Forest University

Program Description: 3 day, 2 night program exploring a career in accounting directly from representatives with top, national accounting firms as well as college faculty

Cost: FREE!

Eligibility and Application: Applicants should be rising seniors or juniors who are academically competitive.

Dates: July 15-July 17

Ag-DISCOVERY

Location: North Carolina State University

Program Description: 2 week residential camp for students interested in learning more about careers in plant science and veterinary medicine. Students live on campus and participate in hands-on learning activities

Cost: FREE!

High School Research Apprenticeship Program

Eligibility: Preference given to rising juniors and seniors.

Location: Winston-Salem State University 

Tuition: FREE and includes a stipend of $300.

Criteria : Students must demonstrate an interest in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM), and want to gain “hands-on experience” in developing an insight into science research. Also must demonstrate a strong interest in attending WSSU.

Dates: June 20 – July 8

Application: Available from Ms. Snapp. One letter of recommendation is required.

Summer Science Academy

Eligibility: Students must major in biology, biotechnology, chemistry, computer science, or mathematics at WSSU.

Location: Winston-Salem State University 

Tuition: FREE and includes room and board, textbooks, notebooks, and school supplies.

Criteria : Fifteen students.

Dates: June 19 – July 29

Application: Available from Ms. Snapp. Two letters of recommendation are required.

Sweet Briar College Explore Engineering Weekend

Location: Sweet Briar College, Virginia

Program Description: FREE weekend program for high school girls interested in Engineering

Cost: $25 deposit that is refunded at the end of the weekend, includes housing and all meals

UNC-Pembroke Summer Enrichment in Health Sciences

Location: UNC-Pembroke

Program Description: Six week residential summer program for rising seniors and rising college freshmen who are interested in medical or health related careers

Cost: FREE!

Eligibility and Application: Applicants should be current 11th or 12th graders who are from an educationally or economically disadvantaged background. Applicants must have at least a 2.5 GPA. Applications are available online at uncp.edu/hcop/components.htm

Summer High School Transportation Institute

Location: North Carolina A&T

Program Description: A 6-week summer program to introduce students to all modes of transportation and to transportation careers.

Eligibility and Application: Students must be rising juniors or seniors and have a minimum 2.5 unweighted GPA. Paper applications are available from Ms. Snapp

Boys’ State

Location: Catawba College, Salisbury NC

Program Description: Weeklong residential leadership workshop concentrating on NC state government and politics

Cost: $325

Free Enterprise Leadership Challenge

Location: Wingate University

Program Description: Five day residential summer program where students learn about entrepreneurship, leadership and ethical decision making. The core activity is a competition where small groups of students will form companies, produce, market and sell products to other program participants.

Cost: $100 non-refundable registration fee pays for room, board, supplies and activities

Eligibility and Application: Rising 10th, 11th and 12th graders are eligible to participate. Apply online at .

Forensic Anthropology Summer Residential Camp

Location: Appalachian State University

Program Description: 1-week residential summer programs to study forensic anthropology with a biological anthropologist.

Cost: $600 includes room, meals, instruction, lab manual, lab and supplemental materials, t-shirt.

Furman Summer Scholars

Eligibility: Rising juniors and seniors

Location: Furman University 

Tuition: The cost for one week is $1,000. If enrolling in two weeks, you will receive a $200 discount (10% for each week) for a total due of $1,800. Tuition includes room and board, all meals, field trips, social activities and optional linens (top and bottom twin sheets, blanket, pillow and towels). The balance of the tuition is due by June 1.

Criteria : Thirty-six students will confront the challenge of global sustainability and will work to craft a  community action plan that addresses a sustainability need in their own community.

Martha Guy Summer Institute for Future Business Leaders

Eligibility: Juniors

Location: Appalachian State University 

Tuition: $900 includes on-campus housing, meals, instruction, special events, and travel expenses to Washington, DC and New York City. Scholarships are available.

Criteria: Twenty-four students from North Carolina who have a sincere interest in business as a college major, and who demonstrate leadership potential, an entrepreneurial spirit, or have unique or extensive part-time work experience, are selected.

NCSU Engineering Summer Programs

Location: NC State University

Program Description: 1-week residential summer programs to introduce students to all modes of transportation and to transportation careers.

Pre-Collegiate Summer Program in Early American History

Eligibility: Juniors and Seniors

Location: The College of William and Mary 

Tuition: $3,900 includes tuition and fees for four hours of academic credit at The College of William and Mary, room and board, admission to all museums and extracurricular activities, all readings and other course materials, and fees for the use of the College health and recreational centers. Financial aid is available on the basis of demonstrated need.

Criteria: Students who are highly-motivated with a deep commitment to learning about the past, have an excellent analytical ability, whose writing skills are sound, and who thrive in a competitive, though structured, discussion class format.

Program in Mathematics for Young Scientists (PROMYS)

Location: Boston University

Program Description: 6-week residential program for 65 ambitious high school students with an exceptionally strong interest in mathematics.

Cost: $2,700 includes instruction, and room and board. The cost of books (approximately $100) is not included in the cost. Need-based financial aid is available.

Sweet Briar College Summer Engineering Course

Location: Sweet Briar College, Virginia

Program Description: Week long residential program for females going into 11th or 12th grade next year. Participants earn one college credit for an Engineering course.

Cost: $550 includes all meals, lodging, supplies and tuition
