Participant Handbook 2018

Do What You Love to Make a Difference

Thank you for signing up for The Longest Day?, a fundraising event that's all about love for all those affected by Alzheimer's disease. On the summer solstice -- June 21, 2018 -- people across the world will do what they love to raise funds and awareness for Alzheimer's care, support and research. It's because of people like you who take action that we are making progress in the fight to end this devastating disease.

As a participant in The Longest Day, you are likely affected by Alzheimer's: You may be one of the more than 5 million Americans living with the disease, one of their over 15 million caregivers, or one of the countless friends, family members, neighbors and colleagues who love someone with the disease. The Alzheimer's Association? is here to help -- all day, every day. We offer information and support around the clock through our free 24/7 Helpline (800.272.3900) and website at . In communities across the country, you can attend one of our face-to-face support groups or education programs. And we're the world's largest nonprofit funder of Alzheimer's research, driving the most promising science toward solutions. But we need your support to offer these services and enhance our efforts on behalf of all those affected.

We are your cheerleaders, coaches and your support system. Our goal is for your experience with The Longest Day to be fun and successful in every way possible -- and we can't wait to help you get there. This handbook is the first step.

GETTING STARTED

When you registered for The Longest Day, you selected one of the following participant types:

?? Team Captain ? a participant who creates a team, recruits members and organizes an activity.

?? Team member ? a registered member of a team who will participate as part of that team's activity.

?? Party/event host ? a participant who plans to host an event or party and invite others to attend.

?? Individual ? a participant who is planning an activity on his or her own.

Your participant type may help you shape your activity, but what you do for The Longest Day is up to you! The tips below are a great place to get started with your planning and fundraising efforts.

?? Visit your online Participant Center (log in from thelongestday) and invite others to join you. Use the prewritten emails, social media messages, posters and customizable business cards to get the word out!

?? Set a fundraising goal. We recommend that each team or party/event host raise a minimum of $1,600 representing $100 for each of the 16 hours of daylight on the summer solstice. For individuals, we recommend a minimum goal of $660, representing the fact that every 66 seconds, someone in the United States develops the disease.

?? Select an activity. For some participants, selecting an activity is an easy choice. If you need some help, there are ideas later in this handbook!

?? Plan for your activity. Pick a location and gather supplies.

Taking Steps to Fundraising Success

Our first tip when it comes to fundraising: ASK! You may be surprised at how many people have been affected by Alzheimer's and will want to donate. Remember, you are not asking for money for yourself; you are asking for the millions of people facing Alzheimer's disease. Follow these simple steps to start fundraising!

Step 1: Log into your online Participant Center. Visit thelongestday and log in to your online Participant Center (link in the upper right-hand corner of the page) using the username and password you set during registration.

Step 2: Update your personal webpage. From your Participant Center, update your personal fundraising webpage and include a story and photo about why you are participating in The Longest Day. Participants who update their fundraising page raise three times more than those who don't!

Step 3: Send emails, mail letters or ask in person. Your Participant Center has ready-to-send emails that you can copy and paste into your personal account, or you can import your email address book and send emails straight from your Participant Center. Try sending a letter or making a face-to-face ask so people can feel your passion.

Step 4: Use our great tools. Your Participant Center is filled with tools to help you fundraise with ease. Check out our customizable posters, fundraising tips and more!

Step 5: Make a self-donation. To demonstrate your commitment to the cause, donate to your own fundraising campaign. This shows your potential donors you are serious about reaching your goals.

Step 6: Share on social media. Share the link to your fundraising page and ask for donations via Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and LinkedIn -- your request could go viral! Use #TheLongestDay and #ENDALZ. Even better, share the Personalized Fundraising Video available in your Participant Center.

Fundraising Incentives To encourage your efforts, the Association will offer branded items as incentives at a range of fundraising levels. You will be notified of the levels and prizes of the fundraising program via email. Information is also available through your online Participant Center.

Select Your Activity

The Longest Day is a fundraising event defined by you! From swimming to scrapbooking, you're limited only by your imagination. Many participants choose to honor a person living with or lost to Alzheimer's, or a caregiver, by selecting one of their favorite activities. Here are some ideas from our participants:

Today, on my mom's birthday, I am climbing a mountain in her honor by participating in The Longest Day. Along with 10 friends, I'm climbing Mount Whitney, the tallest mountain in the continental U.S., to raise money so that the Association can continue to provide support for people living with this disease. The climb will take 16-17 hours to complete and is certainly the longest hike I have ever undertaken. Every step is for Mom. John Binninger

I will be doing Zumba fitness class as part of the Alzheimer's Association The Longest Day. During this event, I am dancing to music, enjoying myself and remembering my father. I want to make a difference for those who are living with Alzheimer's right now. Sonia Vazquez

I feel blessed to be part of the St. Louis Bridge Center, surrounded by hundreds of people that support me and care about this cause. Besides playing bridge, we will have a silent auction and sell T-shirts that will help all of us "go purple"! Linda Powers
