In 2015, tremendous progress was made as Kalamazoo Area Runners (KAR) began visionary

work in order to more clearly define our future. We conducted two membership surveys at the

end of the year; one to measure the importance of member benefits, events and programs, and

the other to assess membership perspectives on current and potential strategic initiatives.

Through those surveys, we learned our membership values a comprehensive approach to club

management which includes the delivery of high quality events and programs, as well as a robust menu of member benefits. You also valued community collaboration and asked for more

diversity in membership and leadership.

We also continued our transition to a partially staffed organizing, moving directorship or codirectorship of events to our Executive Director. Programs and group runs remained with

board members and volunteer leadership.

After a period of concerted growth effort on running events, we refocused our energy on growing our training programs, both in terms of participation and the number of programs offered.

In 2015, the Fast Track 5k and 10k training program established new participation records in

Kalamazoo (153) and Battle Creek (Fall session - 61). At the end of 2015, we added the indoor

winter session of Fast Track, which attracted 83 participants. As Board members and volunteer leadership focused on growing our training programs, our Executive Director focused efforts on our signature events. New participation records were established in the 2015 Jack-O¡¯Lantern 5k and 10k Trail Run (501), and the Turkey Trot Time Prediction 5k Run (922).

Finally, KAR successfully executed a financial turn-around. In 2014, KAR sustained a loss in

the amount of $23,491.66. In 2015, we finished the year by adding $11,126.38 to our reserve,

building towards our future. This was accomplished by higher event and program revenue

and we conducted a membership campaign fourth quarter, which drove Kalamazoo Area Runners to a record 1552 individual members as of December 31, 2016.

The change in strategy to direct more human and financial resources towards training programs and membership growth was effective, decreasing our reliance upon special events in a

competitive event environment, and most importantly, providing new opportunities for runners to find support, encouragement and connection through our organization with the ultimate goal to fulfill our mission to promote the sport of running as a source of physical, spiritual and social wellness while enhancing the quality of life in the community. These connections ultimately help our members and participants sustain a healthy lifestyle through the

sport of running, making it a lifelong endeavor.

Thank you for the honor and privilege of serving as Board President and sincere thanks to all

individuals and organizations who impact Kalamazoo Area Runners and contribute towards

our success and mission.

Sincerely,

Bonnie Sexton

The mission of the Kalamazoo Area Runners is the promotion of running as a source of physical, spiritual and social wellness while enhancing the quality of life in the community. To enable us to further our mission, we engage

in activities such as conducting and promoting races and training programs, fun runs and social events, presenting

awards and encourage running, and engaging in community activities to publicize the benefits of running as a

means of physical fitness.

The Kalamazoo Area Runners would not be able to carry out this mission without the strength, dedication and

commitment of our greatest asset, our membership.

As of the end of 2015 the Kalamazoo Area Runners had reached a new high of 1552 members. This includes 195

household memberships, and 913 individuals, making KAR the largest RRCA running club in the state of Michigan

as of December 31, 2016.
