Think About... how many times you find the word "said" in student writing? Perhaps your students need some tools to help them choose different words with similar meanings so that they can add more excitement to their writing and create a clearer picture for the reader.

How does this look? Have students keep a chart of some common words they use in their writing. For each of the words, have them find 4-5 synonyms using the thesaurus in Microsoft Word. Students can add to the chart and use it in their writing to help them get creative with word choice.

1. Find synonyms (words with similar meanings) for each of the words below.

2. Select each word in the “Synonyms” column. Then click on Tools and select Thesaurus.

3. Search through the list and replace each word in the synonyms column with a synonym you might use in your writing.

Note The first one for “said” is done for you. Add more words to the table and find their synonyms.

Accumulate new synonyms and save this file for future use.
