Map Exercise #4:

OPEC and the World Trade in Oil

Objective: To detect uneven patterns of oil production and consumption and the reasons for them, and to consider the advantages of forming trade cartels.

Atlas Reference: Energy and Resources (pp.32-33); Global Politics (p.36); regional maps of energy sources.

Activities:

1. Using the table of Top Five World Producers of Selected Mineral Commodities on p.33, list the top five processing countries for crude oil. For gasoline. Which countries are on both lists? Explain why countries which are leading producers of crude oil may not be leading producers of gasoline, while some countries with small crude oil reserves are major gasoline producers. (See the Commercial Energy Production/Consumption bar graph on p.33).

2. Using the Mineral Fuels map on p.33 and the Global Politics map on p.36, list those countries which belong to the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC). List at least three countries which have major oil fields but do not belong to OPEC. What is the main goal of OPEC and why do these countries not belong?

3. The following table lists crude petroleum production for 1999 for leading producers. Using the blank outline map of the world for Africa and for Asia (on the back) draw a bar graph to represent the level of production only for the top 10 OPEC countries located on the blank map. The bar graph needs to be on the specific countries. To do this, find the largest and smallest producers and decide a scale that includes the full range of production considering the scale of the map.
