Student Council Advisor Job Description

There are a wide variety of responsibilities which come with being the Student Council Advisor. This list is not inclusive of all responsibilities, but is a general overview of expectations for the position. The majority of student activities require planning time and/or supervision beyond the school day, the stipend for the Advisor is in place for this reason. No additional pay and/or comp days will be granted for work done in the capacity of the Advisor. The Advisor must follow all school district policies and regulations and must enforce the rules of the charter of the Student Council.

Conferences/Meetings

- The Advisor is expected to represent RHS by attending all OAA student council meetings/functions.

- The Advisor is expected to chaperone students at the summer and winter student council conferences. Both of these are held over multiple days and require travel and over night stays.

- The Advisor is expected to communicate regularly with administration and the activities director regarding planning for activities and events.

Dances and Activities

- The Advisor will have a planning day after school gets out in June with Administration to create a calendar of events for the year and to brainstorm student activities.

- The Advisor will be part of the planning team for Summer Orientation and Registration. The Advisor will also participate and supervise during these events.

- The Advisor is responsible to planning 2 “spirit weeks” per year which end in a dance (Homecoming/Sadies).

- The Advisor is responsible for planning all aspects of our Homecoming activities: spirit week video and promotion, hiring of the DJ, reserving the mall, spirit week dress/lunch activities, the Homecoming assembly (including overseeing of lip sync rehearsal), the Homecoming game (organizing of all pre-game and half time activities, including the script) and the Home Dance (selling tickets, distributing guest forms, decorating for the dance, coordinating with PTSA for coat check/refreshments, finding staff chaperones and coordinating plans with Administration).

- The Advisor is responsible for planning all aspects of our Sadie Hawkins dance (hiring of the DJ, reserving the mall, promotion, selling tickets, distributing guest forms, coordinating with PTSA for chaperones, refreshments and coat check, finding staff chaperones and coordinating plans with administration).

- The Advisor will work with members of the student council to select, plan and run a variety of student activities throughout the school year (dodgeball, after game dances, euchre tournaments, movie nights, social breaks etc).

- The Advisor will coordinate 2 Blood Drives per school year. This includes making arrangements with the Red Cross, coordinating student council members to assist at the drive and signing up students to donate.

- The Advisor will coordinate fundraising efforts which support the OAA designated fundraisers and in-house drives such as toys and canned food.

- The Advisor will work with Student Council to recognize the various employee recognition days.

- The Advisor will discuss building needs with Administration to find possible for sources of funds to accomplish building goals (such as a new electronic marquee).

- The Advisor is ultimately responsible for all student council events and activities. Student Council members are under the Advisors supervision, if problems arise or deadlines are not met- it is the Advisor who accepts responsibility.

Collaborating with the Activities Director

- The Advisor will coordinate all student activities with the Activities Director.

- The Advisor and Activities Director will follow and administer programming set forth by the OAA, such as charity drives and countywide activities.

Collaborating with the PTSA

- The Advisor must establish a working relationship with the PTSA. The Advisor should communicate directly with the PTSA President regarding needs for support (chaperones for activities/dances, refreshments and/or funding).

- The Advisor will supply a student to attend each PTSA meeting to provide an update on Student Council activities and to request PTSA support. If a student rep is not available to Advisor will attend the meeting to make the report. Each year the Advisor will attend two of the evening PTSA meetings (the first of the year and the last) to provide a report and to establish a working relationship.

Communications

- The Advisor will promote Student Council activities through a variety of outlets: The Student Council page of our website, by providing a newsletter article each month and by supplying the Principal with weekly items for the staff bulletin.
