BEHAVIOUR CODE FOR STUDENTS

Toronto Public School responds to student behaviour that is detrimental to self or others or to the achievement of high quality teaching and learning, in alignment with DoE policies.

Behaviour Code for Students at TPS

Promoting the learning, wellbeing and safety of all students in NSW Public Schools is a high priority for the Department of Education.

We implement teaching and learning approaches to support the development of skills needed by students to meet our high standards for respectful, safe and engaged behaviour.

Respect

The principal and school staff, using their professional judgement, are best placed to maintain discipline and provide safe, supportive and responsive learning environments. The Department of Education provides a policy framework and resources such as Legal Issues Bulletins, access to specialist advice, and professional learning to guide principals and their staff in exercising their professional judgement. In this context the NSW Government and the Department of Education will back the authority and judgement of principals and school staff at the local level.

Teachers are expected to use their own professional judgement when dealing with students’ inappropriate behaviour. The school has a structure in place to deal with repeat offenders. It is expected that teachers will model correct behaviour to students at all times.

STRATEGIES TO PROMOTE POSITIVE BEHAVIOUR FOR LEARNING

At Toronto Public School we recognise positive student behaviour by utilising:

• PBL rewards – Blueys (cumulative award system)

• Visits to other teachers/ classes

• Verbal praise and encouragement

• Individual Class Awards

• Assembly Merit Awards

• Presentation Day Awards

• Public recognition of achievement at assemblies and in newsletters.

• Leadership roles e.g captains and prefects

PBL CUMULATIVE AWARD SYSTEM

• Total 15 Blueys for respect / safety / learning = certificate at assembly

• Total 30 Blueys for respect / safety / learning = certificate at assembly

• Total 45 Blueys for respect / safety / learning = certificate at assembly

(Teacher determines type of certificate given)

• Total 60 Blueys for respect / safety / learning = Coloured wrist band

• Total 75 Blueys for respect / safety / learning = Coloured wrist band

• Total 90 Blueys for respect / safety / learning = Coloured wrist band

(Teacher determines type of wristband given)

TPS PLATE SYSTEM

TPS PLATE SYSTEM

1. All classes at TPS will implement the plate system to support classroom management.

2. Each class has a designated “time out” class as determined by the executive team.

3. The plate system will operate in the following ways:

➢ Students will be explicitly taught the classroom behaviour expectations and consequences based on our core values and rules of respect, learning and safety.

➢ All students have a peg with their name written on it.

➢ All students will begin the day with their peg on the green plate (ready to learn).

➢ A students’ peg will be moved if they break the class agreement (yellow, orange, red).

➢ Once the peg has been moved down, it remains there until the beginning of the next session (unless moved further down the system).

➢ Yellow plate = reminder to get behaviour back on track, orange plate = in class time out to get behaviour back on track, red plate = time out in designated classroom and notification letter sent home.

➢ The student is to remain in the “time out” room until (to be determined by class teacher and / or time-out teacher)

▪ Lunch, recess, end of day and / or

▪ Class work and “time out” sheet is complete and / or

▪ Student has had restorative chat with “time out” teacher and /or

▪ Student is calm and ready to return to class

➢ When student returns to class, peg is to be returned to yellow plate.

➢ All student pegs to return to green plate at the beginning of each session.

➢ Second “time out” in a day = time out in exec room and loss of play.

➢ Third ‘time out” in a day = refer to Assistant Principal or Principal for phone call home and / or Supervised Play referral and / or possible warning of suspension.

The Principal reserves the right to make adjustments to this system as required, dependent on individual student need.
