PATIENT #1: Kevin Swanson is a 50 year old man who is a heavy smoker and has come in to see the doctor for bronchitis. This is one of several bouts of bronchitis he has had over the past few years. Although the patient has not expressed interest in quitting, his doctor wants you to talk with him about his smoking and perhaps help him to quit.

|PATIENT #2: Patricia Stanley is a 37 year old woman who has a 2 year old daughter and is trying to get pregnant again. She smokes|

Target Audience:

1st year medical students

Objectives:

1. Demonstrate knowledge of the epidemiology of cigarette smoking.

2. Demonstrate knowledge of the stages of behavior change and how to assess a patient’s readiness to change behavior.

3. Be able to counsel a patient to quit smoking according to the patient’s stage of readiness and degree of nicotine dependence.

4. Demonstrate knowledge of prescription and non-prescription medications for smoking cessation.
