COM 1100 FUNDAMENTALS OF PUBLIC SPEAKING - HOME

SPECIFIC PURPOSE: Actuate: To persuade my peers to study abroad at some point during their academic career.THESIS: Policy: People should make time to study abroad …INTRODUCTION: 1. (Attention Grabber) This is one of my best friends, Margaret. 20 years old and enjoying the college life - she’s just like you and me, except, well, as you can see here, she’s fought a bull. She did so just a couple of days ago on a day trip she signed up through her university in Spain, where she is spending the semester studying abroad. 2. (Relate to Audience) Like Margaret, we ALL have the opportunity to study abroad. And like Margaret, it’s our responsibility to grab the bull by the horns – even if it’s just figuratively – and take advantage of our college years. Here’s the situation: every single one of you has the opportunity to study abroad. Belmont offers it and makes it easy to do so. 3. (Credibility) During my time at Belmont, I’ve already studied abroad – albeit briefly on a short summer trip to the Holy Land. Because I loved it so much, I am going somewhere else for an entire semester – Germany. 4. (Preview) So, it’s my hope that after identifying common myths about studying abroad, expounding on how the journey of studying abroad is more than just an extended vacation, and what potential studying abroad gives to your future, you’ll take the first step into the ring and really grab the bull by the horns by heading overseas, wherever that may be. MAIN POINTS:The hardest part of studying abroad is committing. Jumping into the ring. Often times, we’re told things, or we tell ourselves things, that keep us from going (common myths). You’ll be alone. 260,327 students from the United States studied abroad in 2008/2009, according to the Institute of International EducationYou have to speak a foreign languageMost programs don’t have a foreign language component. For those that prefer it – you have options too.WHU vs. TUIt’s expensive/you won’t graduate on time. Short term: 2/3 tuition discountYou reap similar benefits as a long-term study abroad. I got 6 hours + Jr cornerstone in 2 ? weeksBelmont is making you come back to school January 4 so we get all of May off. Why not spend it somewhere else?Long term: paying through Belmont – you are paying for travel and food. Any hours beyond 16 are at a 2/3 tuition discount.Any scholarships you have now will apply.Additional scholarships: Rasmussen. Many of Belmont’s partnerships with schools abroad for long-term study offer similar programs to our majorsIt’s the same as an extended vacation… I’ll wait until after I graduate.Mini bio: Jenny Deloach – white water rafting.Just like Margaret… taking advantage of opportunities abroad, but still living a normal life. Just a “new” norm.Belmont mission: “Belmont University is a student-centered Christian community providing an academically challenging education that empowers men and women of diverse backgrounds to engage and transform the world with disciplined intelligence, compassion, courage and faith.”How likely are you to travel when you have a full-time job and a family? Most of us aren’t tied down right now! TRANSITION: Once you jump in the ring, you have to fight the bull! I’m not saying studying abroad is necessarily easy, but the rewards are worth the effort. What happens overseas that you can’t emulate at Belmont. It’s NOT an extended vacation! Although it has some of the same benefits. Experiential Learning: only so much can happen in a classroomTouch, taste, smell, see, hear.I walked where Jesus walked. I ate the fish the apostles caught – as well as really good falafels and gyros.I saw the many walls dividing peoples. I heard calls to prayer. I smelled the sweat of Turkish teenagers (Turkish prom video).Different kind of classroom: Tour bus. You’re in class 24/7 (with no parking problems!) Traveling with teachers: walking encyclopedias of knowledge, developing different kinds of relationships with them.New relationshipsShort term: you meet people at Belmont you would’ve never met before, and connect with teachers on a whole different level.Holy Land: 17 people on a tour bus. Majors: Exercise Science, History, EIS, Mass Communication, Pharmaceutical Studies, Nursing, Biology, Psychology, Commercial Voice, Music Business, Entrepreneurship, Accounting, Christian Leadership, Music TheoryLong term: Goes beyond that! You’re making friends with people who have different perspectives than you and have grown up much differently than you. Mini Bio: Caleb HickmanMusic Business major, studied in London, stayed with French family in “Bloise” (blu-ah)Now wants to move to France! TRANSITION: In addition to making you want to go back, studying abroad can have a huge impact on your future. How your study abroad trip will forever affect your future. Most importantly, studying abroad gives you a new perspective. Active Learning: Taking in all these things around you forces internal inflection – and this has been shown in multiple case studies:Brian Doss, full semester in Chile: “Study?abroad was the first time that I really felt like I was not being defined by my academic achievement (something that came in handy when I found myself thrown into the work force after graduation).?For the first time, just experiencing things--taking it all in--was the most important thing. Actually, it was more than that.?I felt completely responsible for what I took from the experience ....?Study?abroad is active?learning?at its best--another important part of ‘experiential?education.’?Now that I think about it, my biggest desire was to go back to the United States as a different person…This whole experience has helped me to look at what I've always taken for granted.?And more than that, it has helped me understand myself and how I interact with other people.” (Hopkins)Jane’s inspiration for “Care to be Aware”Me: Turkey… recent earthquake. Personally: still learning, everyday – academics enhanced. Allison, Dresden. CONCLUSION:1, 2 & 3. So now that you know what the truth is about study abroad, how study abroad offers more than just what Belmont can offer here in Nashville, and the possibilities of what studying abroad can mean for your future, it’s my hope that you might feel compelled to jump in the ring. Margaret did and made it out okay. And she loved it. I made it out okay, and I loved it. Now is the time. BIBLIOGRAPHYDonnelly-Smith, Laura.
