Course Number: JAPN 1411

Course Title: Beginning Japanese I

Course Description: Introduction to the basic skills of speaking, reading, writing and listening with attention to selected aspects of Japanese culture; designed for students with little or no previous language training. Instruction is enhanced by the use of tapes, slides, and video cassettes. Lab required.

Course Credit Hours: 4

Lecture Hours: 3

Lab Hours: 2

Student Learning Outcomes: Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to do the following:

1. Make very basic use of the Japanese alphabet and sound system

2. Recognize the distinctive features of Japanese grammar and use correctly some of the simpler grammatical constructions

3. Understand, speak, read, and write simple constructions in Japanese

4. Discuss one or more basic features of Japanese civilization, such as the geography of the region and key turning points in Japanese history
