Republican president from 1923-1929 Vice president of Warren Harding before presidency

of 1923 Known as "Coolidge prosperity" Coolidge fixed and improved the mess of Harding's

administration. He provided stability and modernization as

Herbert Hoover

Republican president from 1929?1933 Hoover believed that assistance during the stock

market crash should be handled on a local, voluntary basis. Hoover vetoed many bills that would have helped many Americans who were struggling during Disliked by many Americans due to the failure to recognize the seriousness of the stock market crash

? Women began to drink alcohol, smoke, wear shorter skirts, makeup and cut their hair into a bob. Many women during this time were called flappers.

? In 1919 the 18th amendment was ratified stating that alcohol was prohibited

? In 1920 the 19th amendment was ratified and this gave women the right to vote

? People living during this time became very rebellious and broke many laws

Speakeasies

? Prohibition caused speakeasies to be formed which were saloons or nightclubs that illegally sold alcohol.

? Speakeasies were hidden and usually needed a password to gain entrance

? Many of the new ways of life occurred in speakeasies ? Many individuals gained wealth by becoming bootleggers

which were people who sold alcohol illegally and smuggled it during the time of prohibition

? Charleston ? Fox-Trot ? Waltz ? Tango ? Dances in the 1920's became faster and during the stock

market crash, dancing was looked as a method to relieve stress from the financial hardships.
