Chapter 1 Extra Credit

Extra Credit: For each chapter I will hand out an extra credit review sheet. The review sheet is optional. It is meant to be a study guide for the upcoming exam. If you complete the reviews sheet as if it were a worksheet you will receive 10 extra credit points. Depending on the chapter some review sheets are longer and some are shorter (This one is really short ). You must complete the sheet for extra credit. Use complete sentences. You must answer all of the parts of multipart questions. Partial credit will not be given.

Cheat Sheet: You can use both sides of a 3 x 5 Card as a cheat sheet for the test. It must be handwritten and not typed or photocopied. It must be your own work. You cannot share cheats sheets. You must turn in the cheat sheet after the test. If you don't follow the cheat sheet rules you will not be allowed to use it on the test.

Answer the following review questions in complete sentences on a separate sheet of paper:

Section 1.1 Introduction to Biology 1. Define Biology. 2. What is the definition of and organism? 3. List 5 things biologists do. (See Page 5 & 6) 4. List the characteristics of life we went over in class? Define each and give and example of each. 5. What is a stimulus? 6. Define Species. 7. Define homeostasis. What might happen to and organism if homeostasis gets off balance and is not restored to

a normal state?

Section 1.2 The Nature of Science 8. What is Science? 9. What is a Theory? Explain why a Theory is not an educated guess. 10. What system of measurement is used in science? 11. Describe Forensics. 12. Define ethics. Give an example of an ethical issue? 13. Why is it important for an experiment be peer reviewed before it is published?

Section 1.3 Methods of Science 14. Use the flow chart on page 17 to define and describe the scientific method. 15. What is the difference between an observation and an inference? Give some examples. 16. What is a Hypothesis? 17. In the book they describe and experiment involving black-legged kittiwakes. Use this experiment to explain

and give examples of the following vocabulary words, experiment, control group, & experimental group. 18. Define Independent variable and dependent variable. In the kittiwake experiment what was the independent

variable and what was the dependent variable? 19. What is a constant? 20. What is the difference between qualitative and quantitative data? Give two examples of each type of data.

ALSO FOR THE TEST: (Review the Simpson's worksheet.) If you are given an example be able to tell which part of an experiment it is. Is it the independent variable, the dependent variable or the control?
