How to fly the Union Flag - Earth

How to fly the Union Flag.

Challenge description for the leader:

The girls are given a verbal description of how to fly the Union Flag.

A number of pictures of the flag are placed around the room with letters of the alphabet or numbers attached. Some are correct, others not. The patrols need to list the correct ones. They gain a point per correct one listed and lose a point per incorrect one listed. Part way through the evening, you may wish to repeat the verbal description.

Verbal description to be read aloud:

Great Britain’s Union Flag is made up of 3 separate symbols. On the top, we have the red vertical cross on a white background which is the flag of St George, patron saint of England. This is on top of the red diagonal cross on a white background which is the flag of St Patrick, patron saint of Ireland. On the bottom is the white diagonal cross on a blue background which is the flag of St Andrew, patron saint of Scotland. The word “saltire” is used to mean a diagonal cross.

The Union Flag can be flown upside down. At sea, this traditionally meant that the ship was in distress. On land, it has in the past been taken to mean discontent with the royal family and the United Kingdom and has been considered to be treason. The Union Flag is, after all, flown to show their loyalty to the United Kingdom.

To make sure that you are flying the flag correctly, look closely at the flag. The diagonal stripes of red and white are not symmetrical – on one side of the red diagonal stripe, the white stripe is broader than on the other. On the side of the flag nearest the flag pole, the thicker white diagonal should be above the red diagonal.

Instructions to girls:

Around the room are/will be placed a number of pictures of the Union Flag. During this evening, write a list of which ones are the correct way up. Points will be gained for each correct answer and lost for each incorrect answer.
