Dear Merryhill Calvine Families!

During the past two years, our focus had been on our literacy program. We want every child to feel success with reading fluency, spelling, writing, and comprehension. By digging deeper into the text with Closed Reading, Text Dependent Questions, and Academic Vocabulary, we are seeing an increase in our assessments and test scores.

This year our focus is on Math. Our goal is to have each child at the proficient and/or advanced levels in math. Earlier this month, I sent out a SMORE created by our Lead Literacy/Math Teacher, Miss Silver. In that SMORE you were able to see all the different strategies we use to teach math concepts and problem solving skills. To add to these skills, we have begun a program on our iPads called "First In Math." This program begins in first grade. If you have an iPad at home, ask your first--6th grade students to log into their program to show you how it works. We are already noticing a difference with our students' math assessments. Engage your child in "math talk" at home. Ask about First In Math and other strategies they are using in math class. We

hope to create a genuine love of math in all of our students. Stay tuned for more "Math Talk" coming your way soon.

The rest of November and the first week of December, our students will be working very hard to get ready for our annual winter show. This year's show is called "Beautiful Winter!" All families are invited to attend our show on Friday, December 4 at St. John's Lutheran Church located at 1701 L. Street in Sacramento. All family members and friends of our students must purchase tickets to attend. Tickets will go on sale on Monday, November 23 through December 3. Tickets are $3/person regardless of their age. Tickets are limited to 6/family. Please make sure to purchase your tickets no later than December 3 as tickets may be sold out by December 4.

Don't forget to donate to your child's classroom raffle basket for our winter show. Proceeds from this raffle and show tickets pay for the venue, light and sound technician. We thank you for your donations towards the baskets. Please see your child's classroom teacher regarding items they still need.

We are now on Social Media! If you are a Facebook user, please search Merryhill Elementary School Elk Grove and like and share our page.

Attached to this newsletter is a "Winter Camp" form. If you plan for your child/children to attend our Winter Camp weeks, you will need to complete this form and pay the Winter Camp fee by December 15. Please adhere to this date as we need to plan for the number students who will attend.

I will be in Ohio visiting my family for Thanksgiving from November 20-December 1. I will return to school on December 2. Ms. Bolen and Ms. Johnson will be here to assist you if you should need anything. Please feel free to call the school at 916-689-7236 or email them at... Rachel.bolen@ cassondra.johnson@

I wish you all have a very happy and safe Thanksgiving!

~Jennifer

Innovation Connects Us:

Check out our 2nd quarter Bulletin Boards in our hallways! We have some fantastic Project Based Learning going on. Please stop by our hallway bulletin boards to see what our students are discovering this quarter. Some of the boards are "interactive." For example, the 6th graders bulletin board has QR codes on it. If you have a QR Reading on your phone, scan the code and you will hear the students discuss their project. In 2nd & 3rd grades, iPads are used to show a video clip of their project.

Here are a few pictures of our bulletin boards...
