Dear RJR Community,

Happy New Year! We hope everyone had a great break and a great start to 2013. Reynolds High School and the RJR PTSA finished 2012 in strong fashion and started 2013 full speed ahead.

• We were entertained by talented musicians and our A Cappella groups at the annual Holiday Showcase performance right before the break. Already this month, we’ve enjoyed a dance concert featuring all RJR dance classes. The A Cappella Jam for Hope is Saturday, January 12th.

• Congratulations to our women’s basketball team who made us proud by winning the Mary Garber Holiday Classic over the break.

• Our senior class includes five National Merit semi-finalists and three National Achievement semi-finalists. We also have five Morehead-Cain Scholarship semi-finalists!

• We surpassed the $110,000 mark in Legacy contributions! Thank you generous donors.

• Mr. Olsen and the PTSA hosted a Parent Information Session to help parents understand a number of significant curriculum changes at the state and district level and their effect on our school.

• Karen Morris, Arts Magnet Director, and the PTSA’s arts support team have been working hard to recruit strong students and families to our school. Several very successful recruitment events were held last weekend and application numbers are growing. Note that the application period ends on Friday, January 18th.

• More than 100 students and a handful of parents helped pick up trash in Hanes Park and the areas around Wiley Middle School, the RJR gyms, and the railroad tracks last weekend. This event was jointly sponsored by the Inter -Club Council (ICC) and the PTSA.

• Preparations are in full swing for the first semester exam period which includes the traditional midterms and EOC exams this week as well as the new Common Exams (CEs) administered Thursday and Friday, January 10th and 11th. The PTSA is helping recruit proctors for exam week and provide snacks for teachers during Common Exam scoring sessions.

• Student Services is working with administrators, central office and PTSA volunteers to continue to improve our overall registration process. We are also working to minimize the effect of the system-wide implementation of PowerSchool software, replacing the current NC Wise platform. We will have a registration fair on Thursday, January 31st for rising 10th, 11th and 12th grade students and families.

• The next general PTSA meeting will be held in conjunction with the registration fair on Thursday, January 31st. The evening will begin at 6:30 p.m. in the auditorium.

• Preparations have begun for our annual Reynolds Revue, an event that highlights all aspects of RJR including academics, athletics, the arts and student life. This informative and entertaining event will make every attendee proud to be or soon to be a part of our RJR community. Reynolds Revue will be on Monday, February 11th (snow date of February 13th) at 6:30 p.m.

We are proud to be RJ Reynolds Demons!

A new year brings more and different opportunities for our many dedicated volunteers to shine!

We’re excited to highlight the kick-off event for our new RJR/Wiley/Hanes Park partnership -- last Saturday’s wildly successful clean-up of Hanes Park and areas around Wiley Middle School and RJR’s gyms. This experience (jointly sponsored by the PTSA and ICC) was rewarding for all involved, and productive, too, yielding 65 bags of trash and recyclables! More than 100 students participated, many as current or prospective representatives of RJR’s service clubs. Each club was initially assigned a particular area to clean. After completing that job, the groups stuck around and assisted others in tackling clean-up of the tunnel and train tracks. Students considering a service club for next year were able to earn some required “mock” service club hours for their efforts. Thanks to members of Ebony Society, GC, Key Club, RASCals, RGC and SGSC for coming out in such great numbers, and to all club sponsors for rallying your troops for this enterprise.

Sandy Irvin deserves a big round of applause for her role in championing this community-building and beautification initiative. She spent weeks planning, coordinating and promoting the event, working at times with PTSA, ICC and City of Winston-Salem Recreation and Parks, as well. Thank you, Sandy! Other adult and PTSA volunteers include Seth Beale, Jeannie Brooker, Brent Copeland, Maike Copeland, Lisa Dull, Ted Irvin, Lisa Rowell, Kathryn Spanos and Yasser Youssef.

What a great way to start a new year, and our new RJR/Wiley/Hanes Park partnership!

Also on Saturday, January 5th, WSFCS held its annual Magnet Fair at Benton Convention Center, allowing interested students and their families to learn about the 17 magnet programs offered within the district. RJR was very well represented at this event, with students, teachers, parents and administrators working together to showcase and promote RJR’s exceptional Arts for Academics magnet program. The following day, prospective students and their families were invited onto RJR’s campus to attend an “Art amid the Pines” Open House. Visitors had a chance to tour our impressive facility, meet and speak with art students and teachers, see a display of student artwork, and watch several performances.

We’re proud of all school performers, members of RASCals and other students who showed up to participate in the weekend’s events, and we appreciate the wonderful faculty who served as ambassadors for RJR, including Daniel Albeya, Franny Apel, Emily Beech-Monday, Phil Benenati, Mary Bergstone, Nikel Bussolati, Evette Clemons, Amy Cruz, Terry Hicks, Ashley Hurst, Derrick James, Linda Moody, Karen Morris, Bruce Moss, Principal Pat Olsen, Caitie Reece, Margaret Rehder and Jean White. We also want to thank the dynamic team of PTSA volunteers who pitched in to share their love of RJR with the community: Lisa Dull, Iris Edwards, Anne Garvey, Michele Grattan, Crystal Joyce, Meredith Kress, Karen Lordemon-Rowdy, Karen O’Brien, Aparna Patel and Karen Proctor.

Both of the weekend’s magnet recruitment efforts were a great success, and our knowledgeable, enthusiastic volunteers clearly did a tremendous job of spreading the word about RJR’s outstanding program. We already have more than 150 applications for next year! Way to go, volunteers!

Are you looking for a way to make an impact on R. J. Reynolds students?  Consider the ESL Tutoring Program.

Reynolds tutors are currently assisting 31 students in our ESL program.  There are still more students who would benefit from just 45 minutes a week of one-on-one tutoring time.  To be an ESL tutor, you do not need to speak Spanish or Korean or Tagalog.  You just need to speak English and have a little time to give.

Currently, our biggest need is for Math (primarily Algebra II and Geometry) and English tutors, but all willing participants can be placed with a student.

If you are interested in being an ESL tutor or simply want to learn more about the  program, please contact Deborah Casstevens (debcasstevens@triad.) or Kathy McLean (kathymclean@).
