Progressive Era Paper

Due Date: _______________________

Overview: You will research a prominent person from the Progressive Era and write a five-paragraph essay. You will have time in class for research and writing, but you will likely need to complete some of the work outside of class (more if you do not use classroom time effectively). This is your Summative Assessment for Unit II, and will measure all Standards.

A five-paragraph essay includes an introduction, three body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Papers should be typed and double-spaced, with 12 point font and standard 1 inch margins. Each paragraph should have at least 5-6 high-quality sentences.

Topics: You will choose one of the following prominent people from the Progressive Era.

➢ Jane Addams

➢ Robert LaFollette

➢ Teddy Roosevelt

➢ Florence Kelley

➢ Ida B. Wells

➢ Eugene V. Debs

➢ Sophonisba Breckinridge

➢ Upton Sinclair

After you choose one of these people, you will research the issues that they were involved with during the Progressive Era. Your goal is to find three accomplishments or issues that they worked on during this time period. Look for accomplishments or issues related to the Progressive Era and that we have been discussing in class (avoid issues un-related to the Progressive Era, such as your person’s involvement with World War I):

✓ Child Labor

✓ Poverty

✓ Trustbusting

✓ Regulating Business

✓ Women’s Rights

✓ Women’s Suffrage

✓ Black Rights

✓ Consumer Protection / Product Safety

✓ Conservation

✓ Improving Working Conditions

✓ Improving Living Conditions

✓ Ending Political Corruption

✓ Expanding Democracy

✓ Helping Immigrants

Use the following structure in your paper

Introduction:

➢ Get the attention of the reader.

➢ Include background information on your person.

➢ Write a thesis statement-- Use the last sentence--to tell the reader what your person did during the Progressive Era and to introduce the topics of the three body paragraphs. For example: “While Taft was president, he worked to pass the 16th amendment, to pass the 17th amendment, and to continue the trustbusting that had started with Teddy Roosevelt.” The reader should know from this sentence what the rest of the essay is about.

Body Paragraphs:

➢ Each body paragraph should discuss one of the topics mentioned in the thesis sentence.

➢ Include a clear topic sentence.

➢ Discuss the issue that your person worked on and why it was important at the time (child labor, poverty, etc…).

➢ Explain your person’s involvement with that issue.

Conclusion: Use the conclusion to re-state what your person did during the Progressive Era and to summarize the importance of your person to American history. What overall impact did she or he have? Why is she or he so remembered today?

Works Cited Page: Your textbook is a great source for this paper, but you will need to consult at least THREE additional sources for your paper. You can use a bibliography generator like EasyBib or use the following format for citing online sources (include whatever information you can find about the website—some websites don’t have an author or a date or publication):

Author’s Last name, First name. “Title of the Article or Individual Page.” Title of the website, Name of the publisher, Date of publication, URL.

**You will be required to turn in the Research Notes sheet as part of Standard 2, Historical Research

Important: Be careful not to plagiarize as you write your paper. This means that you cannot use someone else’s words or ideas without giving them credit. If you quote directly from one of your sources or you include some specific information that you gathered from a source (information that is not generally available), make sure to include a parenthetical citation.
