Thesis Statement Worksheet

Read the Week 7 assignment instructions in the University of Phoenix Material: Academic Essay Instructions before completing this week’s assignment.

Step One

Using the Week 7 essay assignment instructions, select a topic and free write 250 to 500 words identifying your chosen topic and three to five points of view about that topic. Do not limit yourself to your own opinions; rather, try to identify opinions that others might hold as well. For example:

Topic: Gun Control

Points of View:

1. American firearm possession should not be restricted in any way.

2. Americans should not be permitted to own a firearm.

3. Americans should be able to own firearms at home but not carry firearms outside the home.

4. Americans should have to pass a test to own a firearm and an advanced test to carry a concealed firearm.

5. The wording of the second amendment is confusing because there is no consensus about how the terms “militia” and “right to bear arms” should be defined.

Note. The fifth point of view actually changes the argument, not just the position taken. As you develop your thesis, remember that a point of view does not necessary mean an argument for or against a particular topic.

Step Two

Using your freewriting from step one, choose two different points of view.

For each point of view, identify two supporting points in favor of your position and at least one point that opposes your position. All six points must be unique. For example:

American firearms should not be restricted in any way.

• Support: The second amendment requires unrestricted access to firearms.

• Support: Current crime rates suggest that private gun ownership is necessary for personal protection.

• Oppose: The second amendment language only permits private firearms access for current members of the U.S. Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, and Coast Guard.

Step Three

Identify one of the points of view from Step Two as the one you will move forward with for your Week 7 essay. Rather than choosing the topic you feel most passionate about, select the one that appears to present the most clear supporting points.

Using your selected topic and point of view, use the Thesis Generator to create the three sample thesis statements generated by the tool.

Using the Thesis Generator results as a reference, write a clear, one-sentence thesis statement of no more than 25 words that identifies both your topic and your primary point of view.

Example: Private gun ownership should not be restricted to members of the five branches of the U.S. military.
