Department Philosophy: We believe that by creating an environment conducive to learning, building positive rapport with students, and employing differentiated instructional strategies, we can promote student success. Furthermore we believe that each student can be successful in learning to: value mathematics, become a mathematical problem solver, communicate and reason mathematically.

Course Description: This is the second and final course in a sequence of courses designed to provide students with program of study in mathematics. It includes statistics, piecewise functions, inverse functions, exponential functions, and finding the best fit correlations. Instruction and assessment include the appropriate use of manipulatives and technology. Topics will be represented in multiple ways, such as concrete/pictorial, verbal/written, numeric/data-based, graphical, and symbolic.

Mathematics II A and Math Support II A are paired courses and separate only for record keeping. The reason a grade must be given for both courses is so the student can receive a full unit of credit each semester for mathematics. The content of the primary course and the paired course is aligned and the two are taught in an integrated fashion. There is no separate textbook. Students will receive 90 minutes of instruction daily.

Course Prerequisites: Successful completion of Mathematics I

MM2G3. Students will understand the properties of circles.

MM2G4. Students will find and compare the measures of spheres.

Required Materials: You must have a separate Math II 2” 3-ring binder with dividers. You are required to keep an organized 3-ring binder with loose-leaf paper during the semester. It should be kept in chronological order by unit. These binders will be collected periodically thru the semester and a grade will be given for the notebook checks. Students will be allowed to use these binders on some of their quizzes. Students must also bring a scientific calculator to class on a daily basis, along with a pencil. Students must also have access to the internet and a computer be it at home, at the school library, or at a public library.

Calculators (TI-30X IIS): This is the calculator that we will use in class. Students are encouraged to have their own as the teacher does not have enough calculators to go around. Students are also encouraged to have one at home to do homework with. Approximately $12.

Calculators (TI-83 or TI-84): These graphing calculators are not required for this class. They may not be used on the EOCT.

Classroom Expectations:

• Respect others. Be kind in your words and actions.

• Contribute and participate – this is your class and it will be as successful as you make it.

• Try your best. It is ok to be wrong, it is not acceptable to not try.

• Be attentive, and do not talk while others are talking.

• Be ready to begin at the tardy bell.

• Bring required materials every day.

• No i-Pods or cell phones may be used in class. The teacher will confiscate these items and parents will be called.

Late Assignments: Homework and class work may be turned in only for the current grading period. There will be a 20 % deduction for each day late.

Make-up Policy:

1. Upon returning to school from an excused absence, a student has as many days to make up work as he or she was absent. The student must ask for their missed work the first day that the student returns from their excused absence. Student must check the website for any missed assignments during their absence.

2. If a student is absent on the day of a quiz, test or notebook check that assessment can only be made up if the absence is EXCUSED. Make up tests are administered either before or after school on the appropriate make-up test date. Failure to show up for a makeup test will result in a zero.

3. Missed group work assignments will be made up by the student working as an individual.

Re-do Policy: Students are permitted to re-do two failed tests per semester. Tests given by the county may not be re-done. The student must request a re-do immediately after receiving the original test back. Tutorial must be attended at least once before completing a re-do. The re-do must be completed after school on the redo date set in class. Failure to show-up for a scheduled re-do forfeits the re-do opportunity. Re-do’s will not be given for tests failed due to the student’s own disruptive behavior or cheating.
