Course Description: It is in Advanced Algebra that students pull together and apply the accumulation of learning that they have from their previous courses, with content grouped into six critical areas, organized into units. They apply methods from probability and statistics to draw inferences and conclusions from data. Students expand their repertoire of functions to include polynomial, rational, and radical functions. They expand their study of right triangle trigonometry to model periodic phenomena. And, finally, students bring together all of their experience with functions and geometry to create models and solve contextual problems. The Mathematical Practice Standards apply throughout each course and, together with the content standards, prescribe that students experience mathematics as a coherent, useful, and logical subject that makes use of their ability to make sense of problem situations.

GRADING SYSTEM: The DeKalb County School District believes that the most important assessment of student learning shall be conducted by the teachers as they observe and evaluate students in the context of ongoing classroom instruction. A variety of approaches, methodologies, and resources shall be used to deliver educational services and to maximize each student’s opportunity to succeed. Teachers shall evaluate student progress, report grades that represent the student’s academic achievement, and communicate official academic progress to students and parents in a timely manner through the electronic grading portal. See Board Policy IHA.

|DISTRICT EXPECTATIONS FOR SUCCESS |

|STUDENT PROGRESS |Semester progress reports shall be issued four and a half, nine and thirteen and a half weeks into each semester.  The |

| |progress of students shall be evaluated frequently and plans shall be generated to remediate deficiencies as they are |

| |discovered. Plans shall include appropriate interventions designed to meet the needs of the students. See Board Policy IH. |

|ACADEMIC INTEGRITY |Students will not engage in an act of academic dishonesty including, but not limited to, cheating, providing false |

| |information, falsifying school records, forging signatures, or using an unauthorized computer user ID or password. See the |

| |Code of Student Conduct - Student Rights and Responsibilities and Character Development Handbook. |

|HOMEWORK |Homework assignments should be meaningful and should be an application or adaptation of a classroom experience.  Homework is |

| |at all times an extension of the teaching/learning experience. Homework will be graded based on effort unless specified by |

| |the teacher.  |

|MAKE-UP WORK |When a student is absent because of a legal reason as defined by Georgia law or when the absence is apparently beyond the |

|DUE TO ABSENCES |control of the student, the student shall be given an opportunity to earn grade(s) for those days absent. Make-up work must |

| |be completed within the designated time allotted. See Board Policy IHEA. |

| |All make-up work must be scheduled at the teachers’ discretion.  It is the student’s responsibility to ask for the make-up |

| |work before or after school or class and to complete all make-up work on the first day if the excused absence has been one to|

| |two days. When a student has been absent three or more days, make-up work should be completed within three days. You must |

| |have an admit slip when you return from an excused or unexcused absence.  If your excused absence is prior to the day of a |

| |given quiz/test, you will be expected to take the quiz or test with the class.  If your excused absence is the day of a |

| |test/quiz you will take the test during the next tutorial session offered or in class the day you return.  It is your |

| |responsibility to get your missed assignments at the appropriate time, i.e. before or after school or class. |

|LATE WORK |Students will have up to 5 days to turn in late assignments. Ten (10) points will be deducted for each day past the original |

| |due date. Points will be deducted from the scored grade. For example, if the assignment is turned in two days past the due |

| |date, the highest grade possible would be 80%. |

|CLASSROOM POLICIES |ENTRANCE/DISMISSAL: You should enter the room quietly, sit at your assigned desk and begin working immediately. Standing |

| |outside the classroom is unacceptable. When I dismiss the class, you are expected to straighten your desk and pick up all |

| |trash before you depart.   Please do not leave paper, textbooks and notebooks under your desk.   |

| |ACADEMIC HONESTY: Students are expected to do individual work, unless the assignment is a group activity. Cheating is |

| |unacceptable. A zero will be assigned to any person who chooses to copy or allow someone to copy another student’s work and |

| |parent contact. |

| | |

| |FOOD:  DO NOT bring drinks, candy, food, or gum into the classroom.  If someone is caught eating they will receive a verbal |

| |warning for the first offense and on the second offense the food will be discarded, as well as the stated consequences. The |

| |only exception is water bottles. |

| | |

| |PERSONAL GROOMING:  Personal grooming is not allowed in the classroom.  This includes, but not restricted to the display and |

| |use of perfumes, lotions, brushes, and combs. Purses must be kept in the baskets under the desks; not in your lap and not on|

| |the desk. |

| |EQUIPMENT:  Any materials we use in class must be kept in class.  The equipment, including the desk, is provided for your |

| |benefit.  Please take care of school property. DO NOT WRITE ON THE DESKS OR CALCULATORS! |

| |CELL PHONES/ELECTRONIC DEVICES: Students are not allowed have cell phones in the classroom unless instructed by the teacher |
