TestNav Expected Behaviors ListFebruary 9, 2015This document is designed to help users who encounter behaviors that are different than anticipated or do not appear to be working properly, but are non-critical limitations. Examples of this might be with how particular items are displayed or how tools function within TestNav. Pearson has compiled a list of expected behaviors for all supported online-testing platforms that districts and schools should be aware of as they continue their final preparations for the PARCC 2015 Spring Administration. The Expected Behaviors List also includes information on Operating System updates and updated web browser settings that schools should make prior to the start of student testing in order to prevent several unwanted known behaviors. These recommendations are the result of Pearson technical system testing, with the goal of providing the best possible online-testing experience for all students. The Expected Behaviors List alerts schools and districts to the most current known issues and expected behaviors as of the document’s publish date. Additional information will be added as it is available, and this document will be republished with a new version number and date. Additional issues, both temporary and persistent, will also be posted as they are identified, and will be maintained on the PARCC Technology Setup page, under the Technical User Guides heading. Tool and Accessibility Feature Expected BehaviorsThis section provides information regarding expected behaviors within TestNav. These behaviors relate only to the Tools and Accessibility Features that are available to students.Tool or Feature (Forms Affected)If You Are Experiencing…What you can do…Magnifier (All Forms)While magnifying, a question cannot be answered if the magnifier tool covers the answer choice.Magnifier will not magnify the display on the TI-84 Graphing CalculatorMagnifier does not always magnify all parts of an item. For example, there are limitations to the use of the magnifier on equation editor, extended text entry (essay writing), and drag and drop item types. The magnifier is best utilized when temporary magnification of artwork or text is needed. If general magnification or enlargement of the screen is needed, the system zoom (Control+ and Control- on the keyboard) should be used to enlarge all content on screen.Zoom (All Forms)After zooming in using Ctrl++ the screen appears distorted, and it is difficult to read or answer the question. There is a limit to how much data can be shown on the screen and how far TestNav can expand when using the zoom feature. PARCC recommends not exceeding 300% magnification to avoid most issues with distorting items.Color Contrast (Accommodated Forms)There are several item types that will not be completely affected by color contrast settings. The color contrast setting will display a box or an outline around the item that will not be filled in with the selected color contrast setting. These items include:Fraction ModelEquation EditorsRich Text Editor box for constructed response items Bar GraphsCoordinate GridsNo action required. As needed, instruction can be provided to students to detail this outcome with Color Contrast. The PARCC Test Administration and Accessibility Accommodations and Fairness Working Groups created the following document for reference: Accessibility and Accommodation Manual Text-to-Speech (Accommodated Forms)Using the text highlighter in conjunction with TTS can make it hard to distinguish between the text highlighted by the tool compared to text highlighted as it is read to the student. No action required. As needed, instruction can be provided to students to use highlighting carefully and primarily use a non-yellow highlighter if necessary to avoid confusion.Text-to-Speech (Accommodated Forms)With certain types of characters or complex graphics, TTS may not function in a manner consistent with word to word highlighting. For the English Language Arts Assessments only: If a paragraph has quotes or ellipses, the entire paragraph will highlight blue instead of retaining the word-by-word highlighting. For Mathematics only: Open parenthesis and closed parenthesis in an equation will trigger the entire line to be highlighted blue instead of retaining the word-by-word highlighting. When a “pause” is required as defined by the PARCC audio guidelines, a space and a dash will be used with iSpeech.?When this occurs the XML code for the item thinks these are extra words so the entire sentence or paragraph will be highlighted in blue.No action required. As needed, instruction can be provided to students to focus on the entire line or paragraph when highlighted by TTS.The PARCC Test Administration and Accessibility Accommodations and Fairness Working Groups created the following document for reference: Accessibility and Accommodation Manual Text-to-Speech (Accommodated Forms)TTS will not retain the student-selected rate of speed after exiting a test. When resuming the student they will need to reselect their preferred speed once reaching the first question.Line Reader (All Forms)The size of the Line Reader feature can only be extended so far, its limit is not indefinite. No action required. As needed, instruction can be provided to students to use the Line Reader tool within the defined size parameters.Exhibit (Math Forms)The Exhibit window cannot be resized, only movedNo action required. As needed, instruction can be provided to students to use the Exhibit without resizing.Notepad (ELA Forms)The Notepad tool cannot be resizedNo action required. As needed, instruction can be provided to students to use the Notepad tool without resizingTI-84 Graphing Calculator (High School Math Forms)The TI-84 Graphing Calculator will reset every time it is turned off and back on, or when navigating to another item and back againNo action required. As needed, instruction can be provided to students to completely write down the calculated answer or on-going calculations prior to closing the TI-84 Graphing Calculator, or before moving on to the next item.TI-84 Graphing Calculator (High School Math FormsThe TI-84 Graphing Calculator is not supported on Linux Operating SystemsStudents will need to utilize a handheld calculator during testing on Linux devices. TI-84 Graphing Calculator (High School Math Forms)The TI-84 Graphing Calculator defaults to Radians, not DegreesStudents will need to be aware of how to change the calculator setting to Degrees on each item that requires those calculations. This is done by selecting MODE, then changing the default of Radians to Degrees, and then hitting Enter.Assessment Item Interaction Expected BehaviorsThis section provides information regarding expected behaviors within TestNav. These behaviors relate only to the Items that students will encounter on the PARCC tests.Tool or Feature (Forms Affected)If You Are Experiencing…What you can do…Rich Text Editor (ELA Forms)Cut/Copy/Paste (Ctrl+X/C/V) keyboard functionality does not allow students to copy the passage text into the Rich Text Editor or the Notepad toolNo action required. As needed, instruction can be provided to students, the functionality is only available to perform on text that students have written themselves.Rich Text Editor (ELA Forms)The tab key will not indent paragraphs within the Rich Text Editor, it will move the cursor out of the essay box. This is a PARCC Accessibility requirement. The PARCC Test Administration and Accessibility Accommodations and Fairness Working Groups created the following document for reference: Accessibility and Accommodation Manual Mathematics Equation Editor (EE)At times, there may be a slight delay in text or numbers being displayed within the EE window in comparison to the rate at which the student is typing. No action required. As needed, instruction can be provided to students to explain the functionality they are experiencing. The delay is sometimes necessary for the system to convert what is being typed into MathML characters.Documentation LinksThis section provides URLs to frequently used documentation.
