Adam Mathieu’s Pre-AP Algebra II Information Sheet

Welcome to Pre-AP Algebra II! I hope that the information in this handout will help you as you prepare for this course. Please read it carefully and refer back to it as needed throughout the year.

Course Description

Pre-AP Algebra II is designed for the college-bound student and requires the mastery of Geometry and especially Algebra I. This course focuses on students’ solving relevant and interesting problems and on their applying algebraic principles in a variety of real world situations. As an extension of Algebra I, this course emphasizes collection, representation and processing of data. Students learn to apply predictions and arrive at informed decisions.

Materials:

• Notebook

• Dividers

• Notebook paper

• Pencil (all work turned into me MUST be done in pencil)

• Red Pen (for checking homework)

• Colored Pencils

• Graph Paper (may be purchased, or printed from my Teacher Web page- under “Resources”)

• Ruler

• Graphing calculator recommended for home use: TI 83, 83+ or 84 – regular or silver edition

Classroom Goals:

By the end of this class, students will:

Have a thorough knowledge of all of the types of functions and be able to work with them in graphical, algebraic, numeric, and verbal situations.

Use the graphing calculator to assist in the understanding of Algebra II concepts

Have learned the skills necessary to be successful in Pre-Calculus and eventually AP Calculus or AP Statistics

Guidelines for Success:

As this is a Pre-AP course. I have high expectations concerning student conduct and behavior. My students will:

Read the text when assigned

Come to class with assignments completed and ready to discuss

Take notes

Ask questions

Participate in discussion

Always be respectful of others

Be honest

Grading Policy:

Nine Weeks:

10% Daily Assignments/Homework/Participation

30% Quizzes

60% Tests

Semester: Each nine weeks – 40%, Semester Exam – 20%

Assignments:

Appropriate and “on-task” use of class time is critical for students so that they do not become overburdened with working assignments in their entirety outside of class. Approximately once a week students will be given either a test or a quiz, so timely completion of assignments is critical. Assignments should be checked outside of class (or during “work-time” in class) using the answer key provided on my webpage. ALL ANSWERS MUST BE SUPPORTED WITH WORK: NO CREDIT WILL BE GIVEN FOR ASSIGNMENTS WITH ANSWERS ONLY (unless specified in advance), OR FOR ANSWERS THAT DO NOT MATCH THE PROBLEMS.

Quizzes and Tests:

Approximately once per week, students will take a timed quiz over several assignments. After each unit, a timed test will be given. Please see the calendar on my webpage for dates and topics covered. Students will not be allowed to leave the classroom before completing their quiz or test, except in an emergency.

Tutoring:

For the most current and updated schedule of days, times, and rooms, please see my teacher web page or the flyer outside my classroom door.

Classroom Rules:

• Be in your seat ready to begin when the tardy bell rings. This means have your pencil sharpened, calculator picked up, and warm-up page out.

• Follow instructions the first time they are given.

• Be courteous to me and to your fellow classmates.

• Be on task at all times. Do not talk during class instruction, quizzes, or tests.

Progress Reports & Parent Portal:

District generated progress reports will be sent home following the third and sixth week of each grading period. For more frequent and detailed grade reports, please sign up for the parent portal on the internet to review your child’s grade. Go to for sign-up information.

Communication:

Parent-teacher communication is vital for the success of your student. Email is ideal. You can reach me at: amathi@. I am also available for in-person conferences by appointment. Please allow 48 hours notice prior to any conference.

Student’s responsibilities after an absence:

There is a detailed calendar posted on my website. Anytime you are absent, you will need to consult the calendar for agendas and assignments. Students will be allowed a reasonable time to make-up work missed due to an excused absence according to the school district policy. For unexcused absences, a 20% deduction will be made for all grades (homework, quiz, or test) taken that day. Make-up work is the student’s responsibility; please ask if you are not clear on what you are expected to work on and when it is due. On the day you return from an absence, you will be expected to take a test or quiz missed on your first day of absence.

Ending Class:

A few minutes before the end of class, I will ask students to pack up, clean their areas, put their calculators away, and listen to final announcements. Students are not to pack up early! Appropriate and on-task use of in-class time is critical for students so that they do not become overburdened with finishing all assignments outside of class. Students will be excused by me after the bell rings.

Consequences for classroom rule violations:

If a student violates a rule, he/she will be assigned a consequence. Depending on the frequency and severity of the misbehavior, students may receive one or more of the following consequences:

- Loss of privilege

- Confiscation of prohibited item

- Parental Contact

- Change in seating assignment

- Time owed outside of class

- Detention

- Office referral

Consequences for Code of Conduct Violations:

If a student breaks a rule that is covered in the student handbook, he/she will be referred to the administration according to school/district procedures.

Mathematics Department Graphing Calculator Contract

I,[pic], understand that I am responsible for the TI-84 plus graphing calculator given to me for use during my math class. If the calculator becomes damaged while under my care or if the calculator is not returned to the teacher, I understand that I am responsible for the replacement of the calculator. I understand that calculators cannot be repaired and that the replacement cost of the calculator is $135. I also understand that before I will be allowed to use a calculator in class I must return this contract to my teacher. If I choose to use my own calculator in class, I understand I must use it in a way to benefit my learning. If I do not make this choice, I understand that my games, programs, and/or applications may be erased from my calculator.

Please keep this copy for your records.
