Course Description:  This course is designed for students who have successfully completed both Algebra I and Geometry and wish to prepare for IB Mathematics SL, IB Math Studies SL, Pre-Calculus, or UHS Stats. Special emphasis is placed on the analysis of functions, advanced algebra, trigonometry, probability & statistics, and mathematical applications. Students will take a school-level midterm exam.

*Students will be required to sit for the Algebra 2 Common Core exam, to be administered at the beginning of June, 2016. **Students may also be eligible to sit for the traditional Algebra 2/Trigonometry exam; the NYS Department of Education has not made an official decision as of September 1, 2015. Thus, the curriculum will be adjusted according to this decision, expected sometime in the Fall of 2015.

PREREQUISITE: A SCORE OF 80 OR BETTER ON BOTH THE INTEGRATED ALGEBRA & GEOMETRY REGENTS EXAMS

Materials

(3-ring binder

(folder/pens/pencils /highlighters/colored pencils

(text: Algebra 2 & Trigonometry (Prentice Hall)

(TI-84 PLUS Silver Edition graphing calculator

***NOTE:  Graphing calculators will be available to students who do not own one for use during class.  Due to their cost, these calculators may not leave the classroom.  Students may come in during study halls, lunch, or after school if they need to use one to complete an assignment. Additionally, there are multiple graphing calculator websites and cell phone apps available at no cost to the student.***

Classroom Procedures

• Students are expected to interact with me and other students with respect and courtesy. In turn, I will treat you the same way.

• Students should attend every class session prepared to learn and work. You will soon discover that missing one day can put you at a real disadvantage because of the brisk pace of the course, especially since the material is generally new to you and builds upon itself. Consequently, active participation in class is expected, which includes both speaking up and listening. Give class your full attention while here. Do not bring cell phones, headphones, or recording equipment to class (or have them off and out of sight.) Students who are unable to abide by this policy will be asked to report to their administrator with their electronic device(s) and will be welcome back into the classroom without said electronics.

• Students whose behavior is disruptive either to me or to other students will be asked to leave the classroom, will be written up, and held in very low esteem.

• Please refer to the Student Handbook/Code of Conduct for further information regarding school policies and procedures.

Homework

Homework will be assigned at the completion of each lesson and is due at the beginning of the following class.  Students are expected to have their homework out and on their desks while working on their class opener. Students are expected to be responsible for their own learning; homework is your opportunity to practice what you have learned. Students will be provided with the answers to each assignment and time will be allotted during the following class to address any difficulties that students may encounter.  Students who do not complete homework will NOT be eligible to re-take any quiz that covers the material covered on the incomplete homework assignment(s).

Assessment & Grading

Every week students will complete a quiz.  Students should expect 7-8 quizzes per marking period.  One comprehensive exam will be given at the end of each marking period. Other forms of assessment include cumulative review assignments and homework.  Grades will be determined as follows:

                             Quizzes                                             65%

                             Quarterly Exam    25%

Cumulative Reviews (may be counted as a quiz) /Homework 10%

***Students are responsible for making up missed assessments (both exams AND quizzes) due to absences.  Arrangements should be made with the instructor outside of class; failure to do so will result in a zero for the assessment.***

***Students have the opportunity to re-take quizzes (not Quarterly Exams) to improve their grade after completing a review assignment and provided that they have completed all homework assignments related to the portion of the curriculum being assessed on the re-quiz. *All re-takes must be completed within a two-week window of the original assessments and must be completed prior to the close of each marking period. **The re-take grade will replace the original quiz score. ***As students are expected to prepare for the June Regents Exam(s), there will be no quiz re-takes during the 4th marking period.

Extra Help/Miscellaneous Information

• Instructor will make every attempt to accommodate requests for extra help; a calendar will be posted on the classroom door and filled in weekly to indicate availability for assistance.  In addition, multiple tutoring programs are available to students. Please SEEK OUT EXTRA HELP immediately if you are having difficulty with the material; mathematics is cumulative.
