Similar to South Dakota, Michigan State's offense includes a balanced attack with six players averaging between 8.9 points and 11.7 points per game.

? The Spartans rank 12th nationally in assists per game (18.0) led by Taryn McCutcheon's 5.6. ? Shay Colley scored a layup with two seconds left to advance MSU, 68-66, to the third round of

the WNIT over Toledo. Road teams won 10 of 48 games in the first two rounds of the WNIT.

This Week's Notes

The 2018 Summit League Coach of the Year, Dawn Plitzuweit has led the Coyotes to back-to-back Women's National Invitation Tournament berths. The Coyotes were at large last season, but earned the automatic qualifying spot this season as regular season champions. Plitzuweit (PLITTS-zoo-white) has guided programs to 21 winning seasons in 23 years of coaching experience.

Plitzuweit brought with her a new motion offense that features player development and versatility. Experience is a key factor as South Dakota returns seven players familiar with the system, led by three starters in juniors Allison Arens and Jaycee Bradley, and sophomore Ciara Duffy.

Welcome to Vermillion, one of the toughest places to play in women's basketball. The Coyotes are 29-2 in two seasons inside the new state-of-the-art Sanford Coyote Sports Center. USD's current 13-game home winning streak ranks 11th nationally. South Dakota holds a 72-5 home record in the last five years.

This year's Coyotes feature a bench that

runs nine deep with a well-rounded offense. All nine have led the team in scoring for a game with a different player stepping up every night. Four players reached double

figures in WNIT rounds one and two.

The Coyotes, left out of the NCAA Tournament, reach the postseason for the eighth-straight year. This marks USD's fifth appearance in the WNIT where they boast a 11-3 tournament record, winning it all in 2016. USD has reached the WNIT round of 16 for just the second time in history.

There are several striking similarities between the 2016 and 2018 Coyotes. Both years the Coyotes won the regular season, lost one of three meetings to Summit Tournament No. 2 seed SDSU, and found themselves in the WNIT on Selection Monday. Below are a series of comparisons:

Record RPI

SOS

vs. Top-25 vs. Top-50 vs. Top-100

2016 26-6 62 222 0-0 2-3 4-5

2018 26-6 59 161 0-1 3-2 5-3

South Dakota has won 22 of its last 23 games. USD set a Division I era program record and a league record for consecutive games won with 20 this season.

USD became the first undefeated Summit League regular season champion since Northern Illinois did it in 1993-94. South Dakota has won three of the last four Summit League regular season titles.

While it may be the first meeting between South Dakota and Michigan State, it's certainly not the first game between respective head coaches. The two met as conference foes both in the Big Ten and the NCAA Division II's GLIAC. Merchant's first season at Michigan State was 2007-08, the same year Plitzuweit was hired by Kevin Borseth as Michigan's associate head coach. Previously, Merchant was the head coach at Saginaw Valley State while Plitzuweit was an assistant coach at her alma mater, Michigan Tech.

South Dakota tops the Summit League in all three shooting percentage categories for the second consecutive year. Nationally, the Coyotes rank third for free-throw percentage (80.3), 16th for field-goal percentage (46.4) and 29th for 3-point field-goal percentage (36.9).

USD's 16-point scoring margin ranks 13th in the nation. The Yotes average 74 points per game and hold opponents to a league-best 58.1 points per game. The last time the Coyote defense has held teams under 60 points was in 2012-13 (57.6).

Winning the turnover battle will be key for the Coyotes. South Dakota ranks 24th nationally for fewest turnovers per game at 12.2. They also force opponents into 17.5 turnovers per game. On the season, USD averages 18.2 points off turnovers.

On Sunday, South Dakota tallied an impressive 18 assists to five turnovers. The Colorado State game was also unique in that neither team turned the ball over much. It was the first time since November that USD did not capitalize on at least 10 points off turnovers.

The Coyotes versatility allows them to score both inside and out. USD averages nearly nine 3-pointers per game for 18th in the nation. USD also outscores opponents 30-22 on average in the paint.

In 2016, the Coyotes regrouped and went on to win the WNIT in front of a sellout crowd in the DakotaDome. USD finished 37 in the final RPI.

The winner of tonight's game will play the winner of TCU at New Mexico (8 p.m. CT Thursday).

2017-18 COYOTE WOMEN'S BASKETBALL

This Week's Notes

South Dakota received nine Summit League awards (listed right) after wrapping up a perfect conference slate.

A CoSIDA Academic All-American and all-Summit League first team guard, Ciara Duffy is one of the most versatile players on the Coyote roster. The 6-foot-1 guard can defend the post, handle the point and shoots 41 percent from 3. Duffy reached double figures for the 21st time this season and third-straight game on Sunday against Colorado State. Duffy has averaged 15 points between the first two WNIT games.

A two-time all-Summit League first team selection, Allison Arens continues to climb USD's career scoring charts. She sits 26th with 974 points. Sitting 26 points away, Arens looks to become the 25th Coyote to surpass 1,000 points. Arens' contribution extends well beyond scoring. She leads the team in blocked shots (17), rebounds (162) and took the team lead in assists (83) on Sunday. She's also third on the team in steals (53).

Arens is one of the best free-throw shooters in USD history. She holds school records for single-game (1.000, 12-12), single-season (.890) and career (.864) percentage. She also holds school records for free throws made and attempted (18-20) in a game. Arens' 89 percent from the line ranks 11th nationally this year.

The Summit League Defensive Player of the Year, senior guard Jasmine Trimboli can guard all five positions on the court and often matches up with the opponent's leading scorer. Trimboli also picked up all-Summit League second team honors and the Summit's Sixth Woman of the Year award.

One of the best outside shooters in USD history, Jaycee Bradley was a Summit League honorable mention nod. She ranks fourth in school history with 188 career 3-pointers. She needs 10 more to tie Jeana Hoffman (2006-08) for third. Bradley tied the Summit Tournament record for 3-pointers in a game with seven vs. Fort Wayne, en route to scoring a career high 27 points.

A Summit League honorable mention selection, sophomore Madison McKeever has pestered opponents for 75 steals this season, which ranks eighth in single-season history at USD. Offensively, she handles the point and ranks second on the team with 81 assists. In the WNIT so far, she's averaged 9.5 points and shot 70 percent.

When senior center Kate Liveringhouse 2018 SUMMIT LEAGUE AWARDS

steps into the center circle for today's

game, she will set the USD school record for career games played (138). The record will be broken for the third straight year thanks to deep postseason runs in the WNIT.

No team has ever won the WNIT twice since the tournament began in 1998. South Dakota's route to the 2016 title included wins over Creighton, Minnesota, Northern Iowa, Western Kentucky, Oregon and Florida Gulf Coast. Five of the games (Minnesota excluded) were played in the DakotaDome next door.
