MSU Head Coach Tom Izzo announced the team's captains for the 2019-20 season before departing to play Seton Hall in the Gavitt Tipoff Games on Nov. 13 ... Four players were selected as captains ? redshirt senior Kyle Ahrens, senior guards Joshua Langford and Cassius Winston and junior forward Xavier Tillman ... This is the seconds straight year that Langford and Winston have captained the Spartans.

WINSTON EARNS PRESEASON ALL-AMERICAN HONORS, BIG TEN PRESEASON PLAYER OF THE YEAR

Cassius Winston earned a slew of preseason awards entering the 2019-20 season ... Winston was selected as a Preseason First Team All-American by the Associated Press and was also tabbed a Preseason First Team All-American by the Sporting News ... He was also named the Big Ten Preseason Player of the Year, was one of three unanimous selections to the All-Big Ten Team and was selected to the watch list for the Bob Cousy Point Guard of the Year Award ... Winston was a unanimous selection as the Preseason Player of the Year and is the second MSU player in the last three years named Preseason Big Ten Player of the Year, joining Miles Bridges, who was recognized in 2017.

The Michigan State basketball team took to the floor at Seton Hall on Thursday, Nov. 14 with patches in the upper left that read "Smoothie" ... The patches, which they will wear for the remainder of the season, are in honor of Zachary Winston, the younger brother of senior guard Cassius Winston, who passed away on Nov. 9 ... "Smoothie" was the nickname for Winston, who was a sophomore at Albion College and a member of the basketball team ... The Spartans played Albion in an exhibition game on Oct. 29 at the Breslin Center ... Khy Winston, the youngest brother, played 11 minutes and scored three points.
