Principal's Corner

Principal's CornerNote to Students and Parents:? As we approach the weekend, I know many of our Texans are itching to get out and enjoy Halloween with friends.? Don’t let your guard down.? I urge you, if you plan to spend time with those not living in your home, consider small, outdoor gatherings.? Large gatherings, even outside, are ripe opportunities for us to spread the virus and the costs are great.? Please make responsible choices if you are an in-person learner, or if you are participating in any of our groups that come together to practice or perform.??As the positivity rate in Houston increases, we risk having to shut schools.? If we begin spreading the virus now, we risk not being with family for Thanksgiving.? We risk our athletes ability to continue play in their regular seasons and their ability to compete in playoffs because they are quarantined. ?We risk the opportunity for our other programs who are just beginning their seasons to compete and perform. Most importantly we risk the lives of our teachers, parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles.??Here are some reminders for protecting the Lamar community and your family:Plan celebrations and activities with those who live in your home.Create a small bubble of friends to spend time with using standard precautions.Always wear a mask when you are with others – adequately covering your nose and mouth.Maintain physical distance at all times.Outside is better than inside, but large gatherings are not safe.?I don’t want to get into the business of policing what our students do outside of school.? Unfortunately, I have concerns that those choices may impact our ability to keep school open and keep our faculty, staff and student body healthy.? For years we have struggled with the establishment of non-sanctioned sorority/fraternity organizations.? These organizations, although started as community service organizations in the 1940s and 50s, are no longer that.? Even though these groups were banned as campus organizations, students have continued to organize.? The groups are not supervised by Lamar faculty members.? The events include under-age drinking and have often resulted in regrettable decision making.? A large field party is planned for this weekend, the consequences of which may result in large numbers of students being placed in quarantine.??I ask you to partner with me to ensure that as a community we are acting within our health and safety guidelines.? When Lamar Texans come together, at school and on the weekends, we act responsibly to protect our community.Required advocacy meeting all students?Wednesday, November 4th, @ 12:15 pmLink will be provided by your advocacy teacherHighlighted EventsSat. Nov. 18th- College Corner Workshop (Online) @ 6 pmWhat is a?"presumed case" of Covid?Have you wondered how someone may be considered “presumed positive”?? As a precautionary measure, we are evaluating symptoms when someone reports being under the weather.? This helps us act quickly to recommend self-quarantine to avoid unnecessary spread of the virus.? A staff member or student who is exhibiting a cluster of symptoms that are common to COVID would be considered presumed until a test can confirm the diagnosis.? For example, a student with loss of taste, a chronic headache and a low fever may be identified as a “presumed positive” initially.? After that student is tested, a positive test would move the student from “presumed positive” to “confirmed positive”.1-800-STUCOHey Texans! We also recognize that there can be a lot of anxiety about what the next academic year has in store, including returning to campus for those who have selected in-person learning. CIS is here for you during remote learning and will continue to be here for you, whether you are learning from home or at the school, this year.?Quick Tips for Managing Anxiety During COVID:Gratitude: Try responding to anxious thoughts or starting and ending your day through reflecting on at least one thing you are grateful for.Mindfulness: Bring your attention to your surroundings, senses, and thoughts and embrace whatever comes up for you (i.e. feel your feelings!).Brain Dump: Grab a piece of paper and write down everything that comes up in your mind until you run out of things to write about. Tear, cut up, or crumple the paper when you are done and throw it away.Box Breathing: Slowly breathe in for 3 seconds, hold your breath for 3 seconds, slowly breathe out for 3 seconds, and hold your breath for 3 seconds. Repeat 3 times.Support: Reach out to family, friends, or CIS staff for additional support. If a student needs support from CIS, you are welcome to contact Joe Hartsoe at?Joseph.Hartsoe@?to make a referral and get more information.
