What are Table Topics?

This event features impromptu speaking for 1-2 minutes in response to a question you have not heard beforehand. We encourage you to volunteer, but we never to require a guest to participate in this part of the meeting.

Table Topics Evaluator

This person will listen to each Table Topics speaker and take notes for an off-line evaluation. If you would like to have feedback on your performance, please talk to the Table Topics Evaluator at the end of the meeting.

Ahhh Counter

This person counts filler words/sounds used during the meeting, and provides feedback to members accordingly. This constructive feedback is provides a motivation to improve. The list of countable words/sounds includes, but is not limited to: ahh, umm, and, so, you know, er, etc.

Evacuation Specialist

Cerner generously donates meeting room space to our club. The Evacuation Specialist takes charge of helping us quickly leave the meeting room as a courtesy to the next group using it.

Grammarian

The grammarian listens for good and bad use of the English language. This includes, but is not limited to, subject/verb agreement, metaphor, alliteration, run-on sentences, word usage, and imagery. The grammarian will look for good body language. This includes, but is not limited to, stance, movement, gestures, and facial expressions. The grammarian will also give a count of the “word of the day” use.

Guest Escort

Cerner’ policy requires that non-employees be accompanied by an employee at all times. Please be considerate of this policy by permitting the Guest Escort to walk you back to the lobby at the end of the meeting.

Timer

Speeches are timed and the time limits for speeches and other speaking roles are shown below. Timing begins at the first significant word or gesture made by the speaker. The green light means the speaker has met the minimum time requirement. The yellow light is a warning, and the red light means you have 30 seconds to wrap up.
