AP Language and Composition (English III) Advanced PlacementSummer Reading AssignmentsThe primary purpose of AP English is to give students a first-year college reading and writing course which prepares them to encounter sophisticated texts with confidence, independence, and creativity. Prior to the start of the fall semester, students enrolled in AP English will be required to read Huckleberry Finn and will complete the following assignment. The novel may be purchased at local bookstores or checked out from the public library. We strongly recommend that students purchase the book so they may highlight and take notes. Testing on the summer reading will be completed within the first week of school. ALL QUESTIONS ARE DUE THE FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL. NO EXCEPTIONS. (if you don’t know what these are look them up on online or look on sarahcrichley’s teacher website.)Throughout the years, Huck Finn has been a very controversial book, partly due to disagreement over Twain’s portrayal of Jim. Many see Twain as racist because of his use of offensive language and a negative portrayal of the black slave. Others believe he is deliberately playing with us, making us see Jim as a father figure and one of the few worthy adults in Huck’s life. Develop your own opinion regarding Jim’s character.Opinion Evidence ** There is language that some might find offensive, and that is not my intent. Despite the controversies, I seek to engage students with texts that provoke discussion and questions that might provide a better understanding of American Literature and its past. It is rich in literary merit and worthy to be read and studied. ................
