Option B: Character Collage



Of Mice and Men Project Options.

Choose and complete one of the project options, A, B, C, or D.

This project is the last major grade of the 3rd 6 weeks and is due no later than December 14. You must turn this assignment sheet in with your project.

A. Character Shaped Collage: Using poster board, create a collage of one of the main characters of your book. All of the pictures and the shape of the poster should be relevant to the character. It should be no larger than ½ a poster board. Please put your heading on the back of your collage.

• On a separate sheet of paper, you will write or type 3 healthy sentences explaining how 3 of the pictures relate to the character. Each sentence must have an embedded quote with proper parenthetical citation. You will write or type an additional healthy sentence explaining the shape of the poster in relation to the character. Sentences must be neatly written or typed. Sloppy sentences will not be accepted. These sentences are worth 30 points of this assignment.

• Poster rubric:

• A (60-70 points) = full coverage of the poster; at least 25 pictures; poster is appropriate shape.

• B (50-59 points) = a little bit of the poster showing between pictures; at least 20 pictures; poster is appropriate shape.

• C (40-49 points) = some poster showing between pictures; at least 15 pictures; poster is appropriate shape.

• D (30-39 points) = quite a bit of poster showing between pictures; at least 10 pictures

• F (0-29 points) = half of the poster is showing; less than 10 pictures

B. Creative Theme Mobile: Create a mobile that captures a theme or themes of the book. Your mobile must have at least 15 items related to the theme(s).

• On a separate sheet of paper, you will also be required to write 4 healthy sentences explaining how 4 items on your mobile are related to the theme(s) of the book. Each sentence must have an embedded quote with proper parenthetical citation. Sentences must be neatly written or typed. Sloppy sentences will not be accepted. These sentences are worth 30 points of this assignment.

• Mobile Rubric:

• A (60-70 points) = 15 items related to the theme, very creative presentation

• B (50-59 points) = 10-14 items related to the theme, creative presentation

• C (40-49 points) = 10-12 items related to the theme, somewhat creative presentation

• D (30-39 points) = 7-10 items related to theme, no creativity

• F (0 - 29 points) = less than 7 items, no creativity

C. Symbolic Recipe Book: Choose 5 characters from Of Mice and Men and create a symbolic recipe for each. Your recipes must include a minimum of 6 ingredients and a minimum of 4 steps for preparation. Remember to follow recipe format for ingredients and method of preparation, but think symbolically. (For example: a cup of evil, not a pound of flesh.) You must use either blue or black ink or 12-point font Times New Roman for this assignment, and you need to bind your recipes together to make a book. Please put your full heading on the cover of your recipe book. Make sure that your recipe book is legible and creative!

• On a separate sheet of paper, you must write or type 4 healthy sentences explaining one or more ingredients any of the recipes. Each sentence must have an embedded quote with proper parenthetical citation. Sentences must be neatly written or typed. Sloppy sentences will not be accepted. This will be the last page in your recipe book. These sentences are worth 30 points of this assignment.

Below is an example of a symbolic recipe for the character, Hagrid, from Harry Potter. You need to determine what ingredients (characteristics) are combined to make up the characters you have chosen.

Hagrid’s Friendship Recipe

• 2 cups patience

• 1 heart full of love

• 2 handfuls of generosity

• a dash of laughter

• 2 cups of loyalty

• 1 cup understanding

Mix all ingredients well.

Sprinkle generously over a lifetime.

Serve to everyone you meet.

Enjoy for the rest of your life.

D. CD-Soundtrack of the book: Pretend that your book is being made into a movie. You must find 5 songs to represent either characters, major scenes in the movie, or a combination of both. Make sure all lyrics are appropriate for school. Include a copy of all lyrics used.

• You must also write a 2-4 sentence explanation for each song selection. For each explanation, you must use an embedded quote from either the song or the book and include proper parenthetical citation. In order to receive full credit, your explanations must be made up of healthy sentences. Staple these explanations to the front of the lyrics and put your complete heading in the top left hand corner. These explanations are worth 50 points of this assignment.

• Song lyric rubric:

• A (40-50 points) = 5 school-appropriate songs with lyrics

• B (30-39 points) = 4 school-appropriate songs with lyrics

• C (20-29 points) = 3 school-appropriate songs with lyrics

• D (10-19 points) = 2 school-appropriate songs with lyrics

• F (less than 10 points) = only 1 school-appropriate song with lyrics or no appropriate lyrics
