1. Read pages 414 - 417 which covers where the government gets its money or “revenue sources”.
2. In groups of three create a “totem pole” of the eight largest revenue streams of the FEDERAL government: Individual income tax, borrowing, Payroll taxes or FICA – ( Social Security & Medicare), corporate income taxes, excise taxes, estate/gift taxes, customs duties, and miscellaneous fees. When creating the totem pole remember to:
a. Develop and draw totem pole using symbols that represent each area.
b. Stack pole in order with the largest revenue gaining items at the top and the smallest at the bottom
Totem pole symbols are not random. If a particular animal is important to a tribe, they will likely have it on their totem pole. Your symbols should be well thought out and represent each area well enough that someone looking at the totem pole will understand what the symbol represents. They will be voted on and the top four from my classes combined will earn bonus points.
3. Now read 424-427 and create a state and local government totem pole (one for each).
