Objective: The learner will examine and create artwork inspired by Native American Art: Totem Poles and Art as narrative (symbols).
Materials/Resources:
12 x 18" Tan paper
4" wide tag board strip
Fine tip brown markers
Red, Brown, white, yellow and black crayons
Pencil & eraser
Scissors
Totem Pole Image Handout
Procedure:
Introduce Totem Poles. Were they can be found, how they were made, what they represent. Look at handout and discuss line and shape found in each image.
1. Lay tag board strip vertical on 12 x 18" tan paper and draw line on both sides using the tag board like a ruler.
2. Fold paper in half horizontally, twice.
3. In each of the four center boxes draw a Native American Totem Pole image, neatly and filly each box.
4. Add wings on the outer two boxes to any bird that is included in drawing.
5. Trace all pencil lines with fine tip brown marker.
6. Color in Totem Pole neatly with crayon.
7. Cut off negative space around Totem Pole.
