RTAP TRAINING MODULES

Training Topic: Passenger Assistance Techniques Training *

Description: Passenger assistance training is required by many transportation funding sources including the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) and insurance providers. This seven to eight hour course includes video, handouts, hands-on practicum and certificate of completion. The course focuses on participation to achieve understanding of the different types of disabilities and provides the participant with necessary tools to achieve this goal.  In addition, this course will aide your drivers with communicative language that generates comfort when dealing with your customers. Proper lift operations and securement techniques utilizing industry standard best practices to ensure drivers are trained to proficiency in the use of the vehicles accessibility equipment cuts down on agency liability and ensures a safer ride for the transit systems passengers. Training includes both classroom instruction and "hands-on" practice with each driver receiving an evaluation on their ability to perform the techniques taught to proficiency. Drivers who do not complete the proficiency demonstration will receive the appropriate evaluation and may be required to re-take the class Topics include: ADA, passenger sensitivity measures and a “how to” in communicating with your customers, lift operation and wheelchair securement. 

Training Topic: Passenger Assistance Techniques Training (Refresher: Veteran Drivers Only who have completed the full eight hour PAT course) *

Description: Passenger assistance training is required by many transportation funding sources including the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) and insurance providers. This four (4) hour course includes classroom instruction, hands-on practicum and certificate of completion. This course is considered a refresher for veteran drivers who have previously completed the eight hour PAT course and primarily focuses on lift operations and securement. Topics include: passenger sensitivity, lift operation and wheelchair securement.  All drivers will be required to re-take the full eight hour session every three years to maintain certification!

Training Topic: Dealing With Difficult People *

Description: Excellent service is challenging when confronted with difficult situations. This is appropriate training for all who represent your agency. This four (4) hour training utilizes video, handouts and power point presentation.  Topics include: behavior styles, responding to difficult behaviors, active listening and problem solving. Module incorporates training materials from new RTAP Problem Passengers: Challenging Situations.

Training Topic: Defensive Driving *

Description: This four (4) hour courses curriculum is geared toward information needs of professional van/small bus driver. Topics include: vehicle safety inspection, defensive driving tools, rules of the road, following distance, breaking distance, merging, rail crossings, hazards, intersection etiquette, passing, etc.  The goal of the course is accident prevention.  This is a good introductory course for new hires and an important refresher course for veteran drivers and Indiana RTAP developed the course for professional drivers.

Training Topic: Drivers Stress/Fatigue *

Description: This is a three to four hour PowerPoint presentation course. Training was developed utilizing resources and information from the National Sleep Foundation, NHTSA, TCRP Report 81 and NTI. This course specifically looks at the dangers of stress and driver fatigue and how to identify the warning signs and inform drivers on how to battle driver fatigue and stress. Topics include: exploring individual reactions to negative stress and its effect on physical and mental well-being.

Training Topic: Emergency Procedures and Evacuations *

Description: Emergency preparedness is imperative for all transit operators and this four to five hour course address both emergency procedures and evacuations including vehicle preparation, hazardous conditions, securing the vehicle, breakdown procedures, accident procedures, and passenger illness/injury. PowerPoint presentation, case studies and hands-on evacuation practicum. Topics include: when to evacuate, evacuating people with special needs, evacuating assistive devices, passenger/driver safety, and evacuation techniques.

Training Topic: Pre-trip Inspection- Preventative Maintenance for Drivers *

Description: This two to three hour training includes a PowerPoint presentation, vehicle inspection forms, hands-on inspection practicum.  Topics include: how to conduct a thorough pre-trip inspection, what problem areas to look for, maintaining the wheelchair lift & securements, process for reporting deficiencies, establishing service intervals and monitoring repair history. Module incorporates training materials from RTAP’s new 10 Golden Rules of Preventive Maintenance.

Training Topic: Roadeo Prep

Description: This four to eight hour class is designed to help drivers prepare for the State and National Roadeo.  In addition, this course acts as an excellent driver training for testing and improving drivers’ skills and knowledge in the four areas of competition. Topics include: Pre-trip Inspection, Wheelchair Securement, the Driving Course and a Written Test.

Training Topic: Safety and Security *

Description: This is a four-hour PowerPoint presentation course.  Developed for employees and supervisors who have direct contact with the public or the vehicles and facilities used by the public, this course will provide you with practical methods and proper techniques to assist your operation with plausible safety measures. Topics include: facility and bus inspection, identification of suspicious packages/persons, other hazards.

Training Topic: Employee Substance Abuse Awareness

Description: This two hour PowerPoint presentation details the requirements of the Federally mandated drug and alcohol testing program for public transit operators as identified in 49 CFR Part 655 and Part 40. Topics include: Agency policy, regulatory requirements of employee's, effects of drugs and alcohol misuse on work, life and health.

Training Topic: Reasonable Suspicion Supervisor

Description: This three to four hour PowerPoint presentation details the supervisor’s requirements to make reasonable suspicions referrals as mandated under the Federal Transit Administrations mandated drug and alcohol testing program for public transit operators. In accordance with 49 CFR Part 655 and Part 40 supervisors are instructed on the FTA's rule for making reasonable suspicion referrals and proper documentation of those referrals. Topics include: Long term/short term indicators, definition of reasonable suspicion, signs, symptoms, behaviors and the documentation and referral process.

Training Topic: Scheduling & Dispatching (New 2010)

Description: This eight (14) hour course consists of seven modules, each focusing on a specific topic relative to the role of the scheduler and dispatcher. Topics include: Role of scheduler, role of dispatcher, ITS technologies in scheduling and dispatching, working in transit environment, customer service, responding to incidents and healthy habits.

Training Topic: Pre-trip Inspection- Preventative Maintenance for Drivers *

Description: This two to three hour training includes a PowerPoint presentation, vehicle inspection forms and a hands-on inspection practicum.  The class walks participants through how to conduct a thorough pre-trip inspection, what problem areas to look for, maintaining the wheelchair lift & securements, process for reporting deficiencies, establishing service intervals and monitoring repair history (60 min to 90 min pending class size). A hands-on vehicle inspection practicum is completed with participants to demonstrate recommended methods for completing a pre-trip inspection in a sequential and efficient manner to ensure a timely and complete inspection. Module incorporates training materials from RTAP’s new 10 Golden Rules of Preventive Maintenance and industry standard best practices. Topics include: The importance of conducting pre-trip inspections, how to conduct a thorough pre-trip inspection in a timely sequential order, what problem areas to look for, maintaining the wheelchair lift & securements, process for reporting deficiencies, establishing service intervals and monitoring repair history. Participants & Equipment: A minimum of 10 participants is needed to conduct this class with the maximum of 30 participants per class. Equipment needed to conduct the class includes up to two vehicles for the pre-trip inspection practicum, a class room suitable to accommodate the number of people registered, a screen for the power point presentation, and a projector for the presentation.

Training Topic: Safety and Security *

Description: This is a four to five hour PowerPoint presentation course.  Developed for employees and supervisors who have direct contact with the public or the vehicles and facilities used by the public, this course will provide you with practical methods and proper techniques to assist your operation with plausible safety measures. The course material utilized is from the National Transit Institute Safety and Security Training Awareness Program and has been modified to include Natural and Industrial emergencies. Topics include: Define roles and responsibilities in system security (30 to 45 min) facility and bus inspection (30 min), identification of suspicious packages/persons (60 min), observe and report relevant information (30 min), minimizing harm to yourself and others (30 min), natural and industrial emergencies (60 min). Participants & Equipment: A minimum of 10 participants is needed to conduct this class with the maximum of 30 participants per class. Equipment needed to conduct the class includes a class room suitable to accommodate the number of people registered, a screen for the power point presentation, and a projector for the presentation.
