Choose one of the projects listed in this packet and prepare it outside of class. You must choose a different project each six weeks. Follow all of the directions carefully and do your best work, as each project is worth a test grade of 100 points.

• Research a Hispanic cultural tradition or holiday and write a summary of each in your own words, not copied from the article. I want copies of all articles used. Summary needs to be (1 page, double-spaced, 1 inch margins, 12 pt. Font.). Or this can be done in Power point format and presented to the class (10 slide minimum). Must be one of the following:

Semana Santa or Dia de Pascuas

• Create a nice vocabulary poster using vocabulary from chapters covered. Must use at least 20 words (try to stay within a theme, EX: Comida y Bebidas). Use COLOR picture cut outs from magazines, online, or draw them if you can. Make them presentable because I plan on displaying them on wall.

• Research a current events article about Hispanics in the U.S or Hispanics in the world at a reputable news site. Write a 1 page summary and opinion about the article (double-spaced, 1 inch margins, 12 pt. Font). Must turn in a copy of the article with the summary.

• Research a Spanish speaking country and write a 3-5 pg research paper on its geography, culture, music, foods, government, art, holidays etc… make sure you have a title page, works cited page, as you were taught about research paper organization. Can be done in PPT format also (20 slide minimum).

• Visit a cultural celebration. Take pictures, do a write up about the cultural celebration, interview the dancers or the presenters to find out about the celebration. Find out more information on line if you didn’t get too much information at the celebration. Must be at least 1 page, double-spaced, 1 inch margins, 12 pt. Font, or may be done as powerpoint or videoblog.

• Look up youtube educational videos on a topic we have covered that helps you better understand the concept. Write me a 5-8 paragraph paper describing the main points of the video and if you would recommend it to others and why you found it enlightening.

• Research a famous Hispanic person and their contributions to society. Write a summary in your own words, not copied from the article. I want copies of all articles used. Summary needs to be 2 pages typed and double-spaced in 12pt font. Or this can be done in Power point format or as a poster and presented to the class

• Interview a native Spanish speaker in Spanish.  Prepare a list of 15-20 questions in advance.  Tape record the interview.  You are not allowed to ask about their legal status. Write a short essay about what you learned and if the interview changed how you view the Hispanic culture.

• Demonstrate by video how to prepare a dish from a Spanish speaking country (It will be shown in class). Include a copy of the recipe with the food used and translated in Spanish. Discuss the importance or reasons for the popularity of the food in the particular country.

• Research a popular song (2-3 minutes in length) in Spanish and sing it for the class. It must have lyrics in Spanish which are appropriate for the school setting and you must provide lyric sheets for the class. This may be done in a group.

• Create a colorful children’s book en español. Your teacher must approve your topic in advance. It should include a minimum of 15 pages with COLOR pictures on each page. You will be graded on content, pronunciation/use of Spanish while reading to the class, spelling and effort.

• Research piñatas on the internet and type a 2 page summary (Double spaced, 1 inch margins, 12 pt. Font.) in English of your findings. Must include: history of piñatas, use of piñatas, importance of piñatas in Hispanic culture, and how to create a piñata. You will also make a piñata (any size) and present it to the class. You may not buy a piñata that is already made.

• Plan all aspects of a quinceañera such as the theme, religious ceremony, invitations, dress & accessories, traditions, decorations, reception hall, photography/video, food & drinks, cake, music, and court, etc. You will have a (imaginary) budget of $15,000. Make a budget worksheet to help you keep up with costs. Create 2 visuals to use during your presentation to the class (examples: poster, powerpoint, pictures, magazine cut-outs, sample decorations, invitations, or food that will be used)

• You have two choices - either come up with a game and design on your own, or translate and make your own Spanish version of a popular English game. You will present your game (complete with Spanish instructions), and choose players to test it out in class. You will be graded on cultural content, pronunciation/use of Spanish, creativity and effort.

• Choose a piece of artwork by a Hispanic artist (from another country) and make your own reproduction. It should be of suitable size and quality for display. Prepare a 1 page type-written report (double spaced, 1 inch margins, 12 pt. Font) about the artists to turn in to your teacher and to present orally to the class. Include a bibliography with 2 sources.

• Plan a multi-course dinner from a Spanish speaking country. Look on the internet for recipes. Adult supervision in the kitchen is recommended. Remember food must be authentic for the country you chose. Try some recipes from the Spanish speaking, Caribbean countries or from Spain. Take a photo of your family/friends enjoying the dinner. Ask each person who ate the dinner to write a short review of the meal with comments. Present your reviews and photos on a poster to the class.

***Remember- just doing an assignment does not guarantee full credit! You must do your best work and meet all criteria stated above to receive credit on these extra credit assignments. If I feel that you have not put your best effort into the assignment, I may not assign points or ask you to do it again to earn the points.***
