PUBLIC POLL FINDINGS AND METHODOLOGY
Reuters/Ipsos Poll: Biden's First 100 Days
President Joe Biden enjoys higher approval ratings than Donald Trump did during his first 100 days
Topline Findings
Washington, DC, April 29, 2021 ? Today marks President Joe Biden's 100th day in office. With it comes a reflection from Americans on how he has handled the nation's issues, courtesy of the latest Reuters/Ipsos poll. Thirty-nine percent of Americans believe the country is moving in the right direction, a sentiment primarily driven by Biden's Democratic base (68%), followed by independents (30%). Respondents are most likely to believe that the pandemic (58%) and economy (38%) are moving in the right direction. On the other hand, only 23% of Americans believe immigration is going well, with 53% saying it is off on the wrong track. Democrats and Republicans disagree regarding national politics, with 53% of Democrats saying they are moving in the right direction while 77% of Republicans believe they are off on the wrong track.
Overall, approval of Joe Biden's performance in office thus far stands at 55%. By comparison, at the end of former president Donald Trump's 100 days in office, his approval rating stood at 44%. Comparing Americans' approval of Biden's handling of the nation's issues to Trump's, Biden performed better than Trump in his first 100 days on the economy (52% for Biden versus 49% for Trump), the environment (54% versus 38%), the effort he is making to unite the country (56% versus 45%), and the way he treats people like me (56% versus 40%). Conversely, Trump fared better on international trade (45% for Trump versus 43% for Biden), taxation (46% versus 45%), and immigration (46% versus 42%). Biden was then also rated on some more recent issues, namely the pandemic/COVID-19 (65% approval), along with racial inequality (51%) and gun violence (46%).
Finally, healthcare (16%), the economy (13%), and terrorism (11%) were the most pressing issues around the time of Trump's 100-day mark. At this point in Biden's presidency, the economy (20%) continues to be important, but immigration (15%) and public health (13%) have also risen to the top.
These are the findings of an Ipsos poll conducted between April 12-16, 2021. For this survey, a sample of 4,423 adults age 18+ from the continental U.S., Alaska, and Hawaii was interviewed online in English. The poll has a credibility interval of plus or minus 1.7 percentage points for all respondents.
