Lesson Topic and Text: The Kingdom is Divided: I Kings 12-14 ______________________________________________________________________

A. Lesson Content

1. Rehoboam becomes king and listens to the advice of his younger counselors and increases the people’s burden.

2. The people are angry and make Jeroboam king over Israel. This fulfills the prophecy told by Ahijah.

3. Rehoboam remains king over Judah.

4. To consolidate his power, Jeroboam sets up two golden calves in Dan and Bethel.

5. Jeroboam appointed his own priests and feast days.

6. Jeroboam’s son became sick. The prophet Ahijah said he would die as would all of Jeroboam’s descendants.

7. Rehoboam and Jeroboam were both led the people into sin.

4. Rehoboam and Jeroboam were both leaders, yet the elders advised Rehoboam to serve the people. How can a leader be a servant? (tie into our theme for the year).

Lesson Topic and Text: Elijah and Wicked King Ahab: I Kings 16-18 ______________________________________________________________________

A. Lesson Content

(The facts/stories that will be covered in this lesson)

1. Ahab became king over Israel, and he did more evil than any other king.

2. The prophet Elijah told Ahab that there would be no rain for three years.

3. God told Elijah to hide near the Brook Cherith where the ravens would feed him.

4. When the brook became dry, God sent Elijah to the widow of Zarephath. She fed herself, her son, and Elijah by making loaves from flour and oil that did not run out.

5. When the widow’s son died, Elijah prayed that God would resurrect the boy, which He did.

6. The widow admitted that Elijah was a man of God.

7. God told Elijah to go to Ahab where he would tell Ahab to gather the prophets of Baal and Asherah at Mt. Carmel.

8. Both sides built altars and prayed that fire would consume the sacrifices. The false gods did not respond, but God did send fire on Elijah’s sacrifice.

9. The false prophets were then executed.

4. Like many kings, Ahab married a foreigner. How might this have negatively affected Ahab’s spirituality?

Lesson Topic and Text:_ Evil Plans of Ahab and Jezebel Ikings 16-18 ___________________________________________________

A. Lesson Content (the facts/stories that will be covered in this lesson)

1. After winning the contest against the prophets of Baal, Elijah declared that the drought is over. He falls down in prayer to God on Mt. Carmel. Rain comes from a small cloud after 3 and ½ years of drought in Israel.

2. Ahab returns to Jezreel and told wicked Jezebel about Elijah having all the prophets of Baal killed. Jezebel vows to kill Elijah. He runs to Beersheba. He prayed to God that he would die.

3. An angel touched him, gave him food to get to Mt. Horeb..

4. At Horeb, God reveals to him in a small voice to go to Damascus and annount Hazael king over Syria, go to anoint Jehu king over Israel, and Elisha, the prophet to take Elijah’s place.

5. In the meantime, Jazebel devised a plot to have Naboth killed so that Ahab can take his Naboth’s garden. God will punish Ahab for these sins.

6. King Ahab of Israel and King Jehoshaphat join in a fight against the Syrian King at Ramoth Gilead and Ahab is killed.

1. God chose Elisha to take Elijah’s place as a prophet.

2. Elijah, accompanied by Elisha, went to the Jordan River where Elisha asked for a double portion of his spirit before God took him up in a whirlwind after a fiery chariot separated them..

3. Elisha took Elijah’s cloak and struck the waters of the Jordan and they parted..

4. Later, Elijah performed miracles of providing a supply of oil to a former prophet’s wife.

5. Elisha also performed a miracle by providing a son for the Shunmmite woman and raising him from the dead after he had died.

6.Elisha heals Naaman from leprosy by asking him to dip in the Jordan 7 times.

1. Every king in Israel (Northern Kingdom) was wicked and disobeyed God..

2. God chose prophets like Hosea and Amos to tell the people that they would be destroyed.

3. Elisha was sent to anoint Jehu to be the next king..

4. Later, Jehu was to strike down Ahab’s house including Jezebel. Her servants threw her out the window.

5. Elijah’s prediction came true that she would be eaten by dogs.

6. Jehu called for the Israelites to stop Baal worship and the calf worship set up by Jeroboam.

7. However, he was not always faithful to God, so God cut off areas of Israel and gave them to the enemy.

1. Joash was 7 years old when he became the king of the Southern Kingdom of Judah.

2. He was hidden by his aunt, Jehosheba, the sister of Ahaziah from his wicked grandmother Athalia.

3. Joash ruled for 40 years. He was a good king until the priest Jehoida died. Then he turned away from God.

4. His son Amaziah became a good king and ruled for 29 years. During his reign the northern kingdom defeated Judah.

5. Next king was Azariah, who was a good king and ruled for 52 years, except he did not remove the high places of false worship, so he was struck down with leprosy.

6. Joel was a prophet who spoke to the Southern Kingdom of Judah around 795. Joel told the people of Judah that a terrible attack of locusts was God’s judgment on them for their many sins.

7. Joel told them to return to God and His love.
