• Speaker seminar series: LMSA has partnered with PRIME-LC to host speakers during lunch hour in order to inform other medical students about Latino health issues. The first speaker to start off the series will be Dr. David Hayes-Bautista, who will give a foundation of the Latino dogma.

• Undergrad and Community College mentorship program: We will be strengthening our mentorship program and having an event to allow mentors and mentees to meet and establish a relationship.

• UCI SOM LMSA/SNMA will be hosting its annual premedical conference. The date has been set (October 8th) and facilities reserved. More detail to come as the summer progresses.

• Although currently under development, a type of forum/small club as part of LMSA will take on current issues dealing with the Latino community, ie. access to health care services, quality of care, occupational health and safety, etc.

• Mentorship Program with UC Berkeley (Ongoing) – To stay in contact with UCB under-represented undergraduate Pre-Medical students to answer questions and keep open channels of communication with aspiring medical students. • UCSF Under-represented Minority Study (January – May) – LMSA members participated in a study of UCSF support for minority students with the intent of presenting this information to the School of Medicine administration and UCSF School of Medicine Task Force on Diversity. About 15 LMSA students participated.

• LMSA Statewide Conference at UCSD (8 April 2005)

• CHE conference at UCSF (30 April 2005): About 75 premedical students from around the San Francisco area attended a conference at UCSF. LMSA students held workshops and panels mostly addressing how to get into medical school. 7-8 LMSA students were able to help. Contact: Karen Milian

• Accepted Students Weekend (6-8 May 2005): LMSA members met accepted under-represented students and held various activities like dinner with accepted minority students and minority faculty, outings in the SF area, and an accepted students social with LMSA and other minority group members. • LMSA End of the Year Get Together (June 14, 2005) – This was LMSA’s last “meeting” of the 2004-2005 school year allowing members one last chance to talk and meet before first years start summer break. Contact: Karen Milian and Sergio Hernandez

• 04-16-05 Minority recruitment tours/Booth – LMSA members manned booths with information on minority organizations at DREW. LMSA members also joined the incoming students to give them a tour of our campus.

• 04-19-05 LMSA/SNMA/APAMSA Personal Statement Workshop #1 – Participated with undergraduates and mentored them on their personal statements. 10 med students; 18 undergraduates.

• 04-22-05 Medical Student Panel – UCLA and Drew LMSA members held a medical student panel, consisting of 8 students, for 40 CSU Monterey students. This also included a tour of the medical school.

• 05-05-05 Cinco de Mayo Celebration – Third year UCLA and Drew medical students held a social to celebrate Cinco de Mayo. The invitation was extended to USC, UCLA and northern CA medical school students.

• 05-09-05 Medical School Tours to ELAC and Q/A session – met with students from rural San Jose areas. We were able to answer some pertinent questions about applying to graduate schools and furthering their education passed college. We also joined the students for a tour of the medical school. 10 med students; 20 undergraduates from Cal State Monterey Bay.

• 05-10-05 Personal Statement Workshop #2 – Participated with undergraduates and mentored them on their personal statements. 18 med students; 10 undergrads.

• 05-11-05 Premed Journey workshop – Mentored UCLA undergraduates on applying to medical school. 2 med students; 30 undergrads.

• 05-12-05 LMSA Pre-Med Peer Association (PPA) Social – mentored undergraduates. 6 med students; 25 undergrads.

• 05-12-05 Bone Marrow Drive – Joined APAMSA and SNMA in the recruitment on minorities for bone marrow donors.

• 05-19-05 Mentor/Mentee Social – Met with undergraduate mentees at the Wilson Student Lounge to socialize and be a positive roll model. 24 med students; 21 undergrads from UCLA and Cal State LA.

• 05-20-05 Professional Day Field Trip – This event was put together by P4P, and supported by UCLA and Drew medical students. The students were invited to sit a medical school lecture. This was followed by a tour of the medical school and of the UCLA undergraduate campus. A medical student panel was held during lunch. This date culminated with an anatomy workshop, in which students rotated at stations to look at specimens and models.

• 05-29-05 SNMA/LMSA Bowling Night – Joined SNMA for a bowling social.

• 05-31-05 AMCAS Workshop – worked with undergraduates, explaining to them the process of the AMCAS application. 3 med students; 14 undergrads.

• 06-05-05 End of the year CCM and LMSA SOCIAL – Carne Asada at the Westwood park with the CCM undergrads. We celebrated the end of a long and prosperous year.

Future Events

• 07-22-05: LMSA Leadership conference

• 08-05: Tecate Trip: a one day trip to Tecate Mexico. This is an impoverished community where we are the only form of healthcare for these residents. Healthcare is provided for more than 200 people. UCLA CCM is planning this event and has extended it to LMSA board and general members.

• 09-05: LMSA Board Members Leadership Retreat – The purpose is to start the new year with strong unity. This is an opportunity to strengthen the commuincaiton among LMSA members. Yearly business will be discussed. There will also be team building workshops.

• 09-05: Lennox Health Fair

Announcements

• Congratulations to the 1st years for completing the longest year in history and the 2nd/3rd years for completing boards

• Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science announced changes in leadership. Dr. Thomas Yoshikawa now serves as the acting president; he takes over from interim President Harry E. Douglas III. Yoshikawa, who previously served as chairman of internal medicine at King/Drew, also was named to the new position of provost and chief operating officer, effective July 1, 2005. Ronald Edelstein, senior associate dean for academic affairs, has been named to serve as acting dean upon the recent retirement of Dr. Marcelle Willock, who served as medical school dean since 2002. Dr. Nancy Hanna has been appointed as director of the residency training programs; Dr. Sharon Ashley served as the previously oversaw the residency training programs.

• Children’s’ book drive for the South Main clinic. The South Main clinic serves a large number of Latino families. Every visit a child makes to the clinic a book is given as a gift to encourage literacy.

• 6 medical students and 4 undergraduate students participated.

Future Events

• LMSA mini retreat for Utah members. This event will occur in late August and will be a way to reunite after the summer and introduce new members.

• Health Screening with the Latino population. This event will occur in early August on will focus on distributing information about diabetes, hypertension and obesity.

Past Events

• Fundraiser April: LMSA sold churros at Extravaganza.

• We continued to meet/talk to students being interviewed at Western in order to answer any questions and ease the stress of the day.

• Presentation on Osteopathic Medicine was given on July 1st by Don Portocarrero, to UCLA minority undergrads (about 50) who are part of the summer pre-medical enrichment program (PREP) and re-applicant post bac program (RAP). Don talked about the history behind

osteopathic medicine, Western, the school’s curriculum, matchlist, and the

need for more minority representation not only in osteopathic medicine,

but medicine in general. Students will be doing more research on DO schools and applying in

the upcoming years.

Future Events

• LMSA social: Welcome dinner for incoming students will be held in the beginning of August.

• LMSA will be sending students to represent Western at the UCLA Premedical Enrichment Program (PREP) Annual Recruitment and Reunion Day on August 4th.

• Record number of minority students accepted to Western. There will be 19 students in the 2009 class.

• Robert Minera finished a study abroad exchange program in Spain.

• This was an opportunity for mentors to check-in with their mentees and also to establish new mentee relationships. 10 medical students in attendance with 24 undergraduate students.

• 21st Annual LMSA Regional Conference: Crossing Borders: Cultivating the Health Care Leaders of Tomorrow

San Diego, CA. Friday and Saturday April 08-09, 2005

• Issues addressed included health disparities in minority communities, obesity and diabetes, language barriers, and public health policy reform, which are paramount to the Latino community. Participating medical colleges and residency programs offered information regarding their respective programs and the recruitment of Latino and other underrepresented students. High school component, coordinated by UCSD CCM, included information on college admission, financial aid, volunteer and research programs.

• Number of participating medical students approximately 16-18 per UCSD LMSA and approximately 150 medical student attendees from other regional schools.

• Number of participating undergraduate and outreach attendees were approximately

250-300.

• Also participating, were 46 exhibitors consisting of medical schools, residency programs, research opportunities, and test-preparation vendors.

• Second Annual UCSD Healing the Community Symposium: What It Takes to Succeed in Medicine and the Biosciences

UCSD Price Center and Center Hall, Saturday, May 21, 2005

• This was a community event sponsored by UCSD Student Affairs and the UCSD SOM. High school students and their parents were in attendance as well as community college and undergraduate students to obtain information on preparing for careers and succeeding in medicine, medical research, biosciences, bioengineering and health sciences. LMSA members assisted with keynote addresses, as panelists, and exhibitors.

• ULMSP is a four-week summer residential program for community college students interested in medicine and the allied health professions. Mentor nights are every Wednesday and LMSA members in the area participate in dinner and discussion.
