Course Description and Objectives: The UIC Business Summer College Program (BSCP) is a course tailored for incoming students. In the BSCP, students learn to navigate the university, seek academic assistance, create successful study habits and participate in enrichment activities. In addition, students will have the opportunity to connect with the Chicago business community.

The Business Summer College Program will provide: 1. The opportunity to connect with UIC Business staff and faculty 2. Introductions to on-campus success units and current students 3. An opportunity for students to create their professional network and explore careers in business

Course Materials: All course materials will be on . This is a class webpage that will offer updated discussion boards, useful links and announcements. You should routinely check the Blackboard site for this course to stay most up to date with information.

Attendance and Class Participation: In order to benefit the most from BSCP, students should plan to attend every class period. Class participation both in class and online through Blackboard discussion boards is expected and will enhance your learning in the classroom. For the business summer college program, we expect full participation in the online discussions. Discussion boards will be available and you must include your reflections and respond to at least one classmate.

In addition to our six, Tuesday classes, all UIC Summer College students are required to attend at least one Seminar College Seminar Session and the UIC Lecture Day on Tuesday, July 17, 2019.

Summer College Seminar Days Seminar Days 2019 is designed to provide you with the opportunity to receive information about a variety of topics designed to make the transition to college a little easier. You can register for multiple seminars offered during the third and fourth week of Summer College, but MUST register and attend at least one. Each seminar is offered between morning and afternoon Summer College workshops. You are guaranteed to find a topic of interest to you!

To register for a seminar, please go to your portal (my.uic.edu) and click on "UIC Connect". You will see "Summer College" on the bottom, left-hand corner of the portal. Click on "SEMINARS and ONE-DAY PROGRAMS" and select your preferred seminar.

ALL SEMINARS ARE HELD FROM 12:30-1:45 PM

Summer College Lecture Day Summer College Lecture Days are designed to provide students with an opportunity to experience a college lecture from UIC faculty before the start of the semester! Students participating in Summer College are required to attend.

Students may report to Student Center East Tower, Atrium Room located on the first floor. Lunch will be served at 11:45 am. Students will be asked to begin migrating to BSB 250 by no later than 12:20.

Dr. Amalia Pallares, Associate Chancellor and Vice Provost for Diversity Professor and Director, Latin American and Latino Studies Professor, Political Science

Urban Migrations: Learning and Belonging in a Public University

Amalia Pallares is a Professor of Latin American and Latino Studies and Professor of Political Science at the University of Illinois at Chicago. She is also Associate Provost and Vice Chancellor for Diversity at UIC. Her books include "Family Activism: Immigrant Struggles and the Politics of Non-Citizenship"; Marcha: Latino Chicago and the Immigrant Rights Movement" (co-edited with Nilda Flores Gonzalez) and "From Peasant Struggles to Indian Activism: the Ecuadorian Andes in the Twentieth Century." She teaches courses on social movements, immigrant activism, Latino politics, race and ethnicity in the Americas, and qualitative research methodologies. She was born in Ecuador and has also written extensively on Ecuadorian ethnic and regional politics.
