Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time
Chapter 6 in John's Gospel is often referred to as the Bread of Life
discourse, perhaps because this is where Jesus makes his strongest claims for being
the bread that has come down from heaven, bringing eternal life for those who
believe in him. This is one source of our belief in the Real Presence of Christ in
the Eucharist. In the first reading, the prophet Elijah has come to the brink of
despair, but an angel comes with food and tells him to eat, "else the journey will
be too long for you." The Responsorial Psalm is from Psalm 34; from very early
on, the Church has applied the line, "Taste and see how good the Lord is" to the
Eucharist. The second reading describes an ideal Christian community
characterized by mutual love and service, which is the greatest fruit of its
Eucharistic celebrations.

Today's 2nd Collection is for INFIRM PRIESTS
The Pastor's Desk In today's Gospel reading we hear Jesus proclaim " I am the living bread that came down from heaven." Some of his listeners found his words difficult to believe and turned-away. Many Christians do not believe that Jesus came to give us his body and blood in Holy Communion under the forms of bread and wine. Lord, help us to believe in your Real Presence in Holy Communion!
PRAYER TO THE HOLY FAMILY Lord Jesus Christ, who, being made subject to Mary and Joseph did consecrate domestic life by thy ineffable virtues:, grant that we, with the assistance of both, may be taught by their example and may attain to their everlasting fellowship. Who lives and reigns world without end, Amen.
A PRAYER FOR SPIRITUAL COMMUNION
My Jesus, I believe that you are present in the Most Holy Sacrament. I love you above all things and I desire to receive you in my soul. Since I cannot at this moment receive you sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace you as if you were already there and unite myself wholly to you. Never permit me to be separated from you. Amen.

CIVIL DISCOURSE "Do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God." These words
bring us up short! What could we be doing to grieve the Holy Spirit? Alas, the same things that the Ephesians were doing in the time of Paul, that is, fighting, shouting, reviling each other with fury, anger, and malice. Just tune in to talk radio some day or observe some "road rage" on the expressway. If we who are partakers of the Body of Christ can treat one another this way, what does that mean about our belief in Christ's message of peace and reconciliation? The Eucharist is the sacrament of unity. It is communion with God and with each other. A good first step would be to speak civilly to each other, even in disagreement!

FEAST OF FAITH Sanctus, Sanctus, Sanctus: Song of Heaven
The words of the Sanctus are rooted in the scriptures. They recall the song of the seraphim in the prophet Isaiah's vision of God in majesty: "Seraphim were stationed above; each of them had six wings: with two they veiled their faces, with two they veiled their feet, and with two they hovered aloft. `Holy, holy, holy is the LORD of hosts!' they cried one to the other. `All the earth is filled with his glory!' " (Isaiah 6:2-3). They recall the Gospel accounts of Jesus' entry into Jerusalem: "Hosanna to the Son of David; blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord; hosanna in the highest" (Matthew 21:9). Yet the liturgy adds something new to these ancient texts. The seraphim sang, "the earth is filled with his glory." But the liturgy proclaims, "heaven and earth are full of your glory." In the Eucharist, earth and heaven meet. For a moment in time, we join in the song that the angels sing for all time. The Sanctus raises us to heaven, but does not remove us from the earth. It is the song of the King who took on our human flesh so that we might share in his divine life.
