MARKING SYSTEM:

Our system of marking is alphabetical and may be interpreted as follows:

A = Excellent B = Good C = Average D = Poor E = Failure I = Incomplete

Grading system for final semester grade (three marking periods and final):

SUGGESTED:

Relative Weight: 1st 6 weeks - 25% 2nd 6 weeks - 25% 3rd 6 weeks - 25% Final Exam - 25%

A = 4.0 B = 3.0 C = 2.0 D = 1.0 I = 0.0

A- = 3.7 B- = 2.7 C- = 1.7 D- = 0.7

B+ = 3.3 C+ = 2.3 D+ = 1.3 E = 0.0

It is expected that a student will pass two of the three six-week marking periods and take any required final examinations in order to receive a passing grade for the semester. In questionable cases, the predominant grade during the six-week marking period will be the deciding factor. Extraordinary application and accomplishment by a student during a final marking period and a good grade on the final exam may indicate to the teacher that the student should pass the course despite failing grades at the end of the first and second marking periods. Variations from the suggested weighting should be brought to the principal's attention.

Class of 2020 Honors

For the class of 2019 and all those after the graduation, honors will use the “laude” system: A three-tiered honor system with “cum laude,” “magna cum laude,” and “summa cum laude” designations is established for recognizing outstanding academic performance during high school.

|Cum laude |Magna cum laude |Summa cum laude |

|  | | |

|3.50 - 3.79 |GPA 3.80 - 4.14 |GPA 4.15 and above |

|weighted GPA |weighted GPA |weighted GPA |

Grade point average is computed by adding merit points (see above) and dividing by the number of credits attempted. College Board (AP) courses are given one additional merit point. Additional summa cum laude requirements include: 1 AP Class from each of the four disciplines, and 75th national percentile on the SAT.

Current cumulative GPA’s are calculated as unweighted and include all courses.

Class of 2012 GPA Range: Highest = 4.00 Lowest = 0.53 Mean GPA = 2.55

1st quartile – 3.15 to 4.00 3rd quartile – 1.91 to 2.50

2nd quartile – 2.51 to 3.14 4th quartile – 0.00 to 1.90

Testing

All students are required to take all testing portions of the MSTEP (SAT, Workkeys, and MSTEP components) as a graduation requirement. This typically takes place their junior year. Juniors also have an opportunity to enter the National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (NMS) competition by taking the PSAT.

Sophomores participate in PSAT10.

Freshmen participate in the PSAT8/9 test. This is an SAT precursor that gives predictive and student readiness information for the SAT.

All students electing to take AP courses are encouraged to take the year-end AP test for that subject that may qualify them for college credit. (There is a fee for these tests)

|Grade Quality Points |

|A – Excellent |94 – 100 |4.0 |

|B – Above Average |85 – 93 |3.0 |

|C – Average |75 – 84 |2.0 |

|D – Below Average |65 – 74 |1.0 |

|E – Failure |64 or below |0.0 |

Rank

Class rank is determined at the end of seven semesters.

• Rank in Class: Students are ranked in their class based on their unweighted GPA, with some students having a shared ranking.

GPA Calculation

GPA is computed using the above quality points. Beginning with grade 9, all subjects, whether passed or failed, are included in the computation. A minimum of 22 credits is required for graduation. Grades are recorded on the transcript and grade point average is computed in January and May.
