WELCOME MESSAGE FROM NASAP PRESIDENT

Susan Belangee

Tucson, Here We Come!

What a pleasure it is to invite you to explore and experience all that the 67th Annual NASAP Conference has to offer. There are so many opportunities to learn and network with fellow Adlerians and those who are new to our event this year. We extend a warm welcome to those joining us from the Pima County Healthy and Safe Schools Division. Attendees will have the chance on Thursday (pre-conference sessions) and Friday (regular conference sessions) to choose from both NASAP-selected presentations and those from the Pima County track. The theme for this year is Healing Our Communities Through Social Interest and there will be a focus on trauma-informed practice throughout the conference.

Peek inside this flyer to see details about our Ansbacher Lecture with Anthea Millar kicking off our conference on Thursday evening; the special panel following lunch on Friday; and on Friday evening another well-known speaker, Dr. Victoria Maizes, looking at Integrative Medicine and Mental Health.

The local area offers culinary delights and sights that can only be seen in the southwest. For those who won a trolley pass at the Toronto conference, remember to bring them with you! Our hotel is right on the street car line which gives access to all sorts of restaurants, shops, and entertainment. I look forward to seeing you at the conference!

Healing Anxiety in Adolescents: An Integrated Approach

Victoria Maizes, MD

Healing Anxiety in Adolescents: An Integrated Approach will be an interactive presentation. Anxiety, which can be situational or chronic, is extremely common in the United States; up to 38% of girls and 26% of boys aged 13 ? 17 experience it annually. While pharmaceutical approaches can be helpful, they are most effective and safest when reserved for short term use. A large body of evidence supports the use of nonpharmacological therapies including exercise, nutrition, mind-body practices, acupuncture, and some dietary supplements. Dr. Maizes will review the evidence-based strategies for managing anxiety in adolescents.

Dr. Maizes is Executive Director of the University of Arizona Center for Integrative Medicine and a
