Math Literature Project Planning Sheet

Project Title:

Microsoft PowerPoint: State PowerPoint Presentation (4 days)

Description of Technology Integration:

Students will use the Internet to gather information about a U.S. State. They will create a slide presentation of bulleted facts and pictures, displaying their knowledge of the state’s symbols, geography, and history.

Learning Objective(s):

1. Students will use the Internet to locate information on a given topic.

2. Students will create a slide presentation with information obtained through the Internet.

3. Students will import pictures from the Internet and/or other sources.

Materials Needed:

• Teacher-created recording sheet

• Sample of finished product

• Clipboards

• Erasable pens/pencils

• Favorite to: MLT Resource Page ()

Introduction and Basic Information

• Discussion of United States. Use Connecticut as an example to discuss state’s capital, bird, tree, flag, etc.

• Share completed project

Procedures

Day One (possibly Day Two also for third grade):

Students use Internet to retrieve project template and gather pictures

• Open teacher-created PowerPoint template in MLT Student Resources:

o Students open Internet Explorer

o Go to Favorites menu and select MLT Student Resources

o Click on link to US States PowerPoint Project

o Scroll down page to Resources. Right-click on Project Template link.

o Choose Save Target As and then click Save. (This will save the template in the student’s My Documents folder)

o Then click Open

• Students will type the name of the state and their names on the Title slide

• Minimize PowerPoint and return to website. Students will navigate to site #5 (American Flag) and save the image (right-click on image, save picture as, click save )

• Return to PowerPoint (slide 1), Right-click on background of slide, and click on Background. Hold down the arrow next to the background fill color and go to Fill Effects.

• Click on the Picture tab, click on Select Picture, click on name of picture (flag-c), click on Insert, click OK, and click Apply.

• Minimize PowerPoint and return to Internet Explorer, press back button to return to US State PowerPoint website.

• Click on link #1 (Enchanted Learning). Student will scroll down the page and click on the link to their state.

• Scroll to state map, right-click on map, Copy

• Return to PowerPoint, go to slide 2, Right-click, Paste

• Click on Slide 3 (State Flag)

• Return to Internet Explorer, scroll down the page further, right-click on state flag, copy

• Return to PowerPoint, right click on background of slide 3, paste, and resize flag.

• Return to Internet Explorer, go to site 3 (), click on state name, scroll down to bird and click on name of state’s bird. Right-click on picture of bird and copy.

• Return to PowerPoint, go to slide 4, right click on background, and paste.

• Type name of bird in text box on slide 4.

• Return to Internet Explorer, press back button, scroll down to flower and click on name of state’s flower. Right-click on picture of flower and copy.

• Return to PowerPoint, go to slide 5, right click on background, and paste.

• Type name of flower in text box on slide 5.

• Return to Internet Explorer, press back button, scroll down to tree and click on name of state’s tree. Right-click on picture of tree and copy.

• Return to PowerPoint, go to slide 6, right click on background, and paste.

• Type name of flower in text box on slide 6.

• Save state presentation and exit programs.

Day Two: Students use Internet for research

• Double-click on Internet Explorer, click on Favorites menu and go to MLT Resource Page. Click on link to US States PowerPoint Project.

• Use websites and Recording Sheet to collect information on state. Students will research their state’s symbols, geography and history. (Teacher will model note taking if appropriate for group. A copy of the State Note Sheet is on the MLT student resources State page.)

Day Three: Students type facts onto slides.

• Open saved PowerPoint presentation in the My Documents folder.

• Use Vision to demonstrate how to format slide backgrounds and type and format text.

• Students will use this day to type information on appropriate slides and format slide backgrounds.

Day Four: Students apply transitions and animations

• Use Vision to demonstrate Slide Transitions: Go to slide 1 and under the Slide Show menu, select Slide Transition. Model how to choose a transition. Leave everything on mouse click or suggest a set number of seconds to use per slide. When the transition has been selected, students should choose Apply to All.

• Custom Animations: Go to the first slide, from the Slide Show menu, choose Custom Animation. Select the order and effect for each object on the slide. Use Preview to ensure that all objects are animated in an appropriate sequence. Click OK when done.

*This needs to be done for each slide; it may take too much time for the students to animate every slide, but the higher ability students should be able to animate text and pictures on each slide.

Important Considerations:

• Additional time may be needed to complete the project

• Readability level of websites may be too difficult for some students.
