If you are purchasing relatively small pieces of furniture from an individual, a van taxi may be able to transport it. Be sure to tell the taxi company that you will need to move furniture. U-Haul has a list of movers who also do just the driving for a flat fee + per mile surcharge (you pay the gas and tolls). If you want to rent your own truck, the smallest (8 ft. pick up truck) rents for $19.95/day plus 49 cents per mile.
