Note: Sometimes a social robot such as AIBO is considered a domestic robot as well. These two categories have become one in many instances, fulfilling both the role of emotional fulfillment as well as doing daily chores.

Social Robots

Definition: “A social robot is an autonomous robot that interacts and communicates with humans or other autonomous physical agents by following social behaviors and rules attached to its role.”

A social robot without a physical body: Some believe the a true social robot needs a physical body but there are some in development that are purely on your computer screen. Carnegie Mellon’s Social Robots project.

Kismet:

Humanoid robot developed by MIT.

• Designed to take a part of our daily lives by cooperating & interacting with humans to entertain, do daily chores, and even help with healthcare.

• Engages in expressive face to face interaction.

• Learns from human interaction & instruction.

• if person is too close, Kismet backs off

• if person speaks too fast, Kismet get’s irritated

• MIT still researching & developing interaction of a nuturing caretaker (human) & immature learner (Kismet)

Androids:

Very lifelike humanoid robot.

• Imitates human behavior in facial expressions, shifting positions, head/hand/eye movements, & even breathing movements

• Uses sensors to keep eye contact to whoever it’s speaking to

• Shows facial expressions when touched on face

• Can still be controlled by humans.

• Goal: service the elderly, conversation partners, receptionists, TV anchors, etc.

My Real Baby:

Lifelike baby doll.

• Developed by iRobot & Hasbro (discontinued)

• Natural response technology: responds to child’s actions w/ realistic emotional responses

• Can change facial expressions: lips, cheeks, forehead (eyebrows)

• Blinks, sucks thumb, drinks from bottle, etc.

• Rambles baby words & noises

• Emotionally responds using Behavior Language Operating System (developed by Rodney Brooks of MIT AI Lab)

• Cries when not fed, rock it to sleep, burp it

• Goal: fun play experience for young children

Child-sized humanoid robot for possible therapeutic uses.

• Developed by University of Herfordshire

• Helps autistic children by encouraging social interaction.

• Used as a part of the Aurora project which investigates robotic systems as therapeutic/educational interaction systems.

RUBI:

Robot Using Bayesian Inference

• Robotic nursery teacher developed at UCSD.

• 3 ft tall, plump, soft, a head, two arms, 4 wheels for transportation

• Displays facial expressions but cannot physically react back to a hug. Future: develop being able to hug and hold hands with kids.

• Has TV on chest for kids to play with.

• Researching how toddlers respond to robots and teaching methods.

• Developed by Honda

• Can run (4 mph), side step, balance on one foot, talk, dance, climb stairs, etc.

• Humanlike motions such as waving “hi” or bowing to a crowd and saying “thank you”

• New asimo can yield to people as well as perform small tasks such as carrying a tray & pushing a cart.

• Connects and retrieves info from internet

• Understands/recognize individuals as well as guide them

• Designed/manufactured by Sony (1999 – 2006)

• Walk, “see”, and recognize spoken commands

• Autonomous robot: able to learn/mature based on external stimuli

• RoboCup: competition of programmed AIBOs playing soccer

• First versions started out very robotic-like, later designed to be cuter

Definition: Robots used for household chores or entertainment at home. Whereas social robots are humanoid (look and speak like humans), domestic robots that serve no emotional needs are usually machine-like only.
