Current Carbon Trust project

Demonstration of a low energy whole house ventilation system

The low energy whole house ventilation system is a new approach to achieving energy efficient ventilation, whilst maintaining good air quality throughout the year. This approach uses ‘supply air’ windows as a heat reclaiming device, passive stack vents and self-regulating ventilators to control airflow levels. The system has earned the name ‘Dwell-Vent’ and has proven to reduce carbon emissions both by comparison with other methods of ventilation, and because the windows achieve an excellent standard of insulation.

The current project is being developed from previous work and is seeking to demonstrate Dwell-Vent within a large number of dwellings. The performance of the system and levels of ventilation and energy performance in these dwellings will be monitored and assessed. This performance will be measured against the forthcoming Building Regulation (Part F and Part L) revisions, which are due in April 2006.

The project is being funded by the Carbon Trust through their Innovation programme. The Martin Centre for Architectural and Urban Studies at Cambridge University, and latterly Dwell-Vent Ltd, have been leading the project and are working with a number of project partners including:

• Titon Hardware Ltd

• Howarth Timber Windows and Doors Ltd

• Flagship Housing Group Ltd

• Building Research Establishment Ltd

• Cambridge Architectural Research Ltd

• Sententia Consulting

• And in collaboration with Lovell Partnerships
