Reflexive Verbs

Reflexive verbs are used to describe when a person is both doing an action AND receiving the action in a sentence. Reflexive verbs carry the “se” ending in the infinitive form (bañarse, cepillarse, sentarse).

Examples of Reflexive actions Examples of Non-Reflexive actions

Lavarse las manos (to wash your hands) Lavar el coche (to wash the car)

Pintarse las uñas (to paint your nails) Pintar la casa (to paint the house)

Bañarse (to bath yourself) Bañar al niño (to bath a child)

Here is a list of common reflexive verbs:

Levantarse (to get up/stand up) Bañarse (to bath) Ponerse (to put on) Calmarse (to calm down)

Despertarse(e-ie) (to wake up) Lavarse (to wash) Pintarse (to paint) Callarse (to be quiet)

Acostarse (o-ue) (to go to bed) Secarse (to dry) Vestirse (e-i) (to dress) Divertirse (e-ie) (to have fun)

Dormirse (to fall asleep) Ducharse (to shower) Cepillarse (to brush) Prepararse (to prepare)

*Many of these verbs have reflexive forms AND non-reflexive forms – it depends on the action taking place!

Here’s how you form a reflexive verb:

1) Levantarse

2) Drop the infinitive and the reflexive pronoun ( Levant____

3) Add the appropriate verb ending ( Levanto (yo form)

4) Add the appropriate reflexive pronoun ( Me levanto (I get myself up/I stand myself up)

Reflexive verbs work in ALL verb tenses:

Present tense: Me pongo maquillaje todos los días

Present progressive: Me estoy bañando

Hace + Time: Hace 10 minutos que te pintas las uñas

Acabar + de: Acaban de sentarse las chicas

Commands: Levantate!
