Verbs

A verb is a word that shows action or being

Action verbs state an action being done by a person or thing.

Linking verbs show a person or thing’s state of being (what it is)

BE

have been/has been/had been

Linking verbs RENAME, IDENTIFY, or DESCRIBE a person or thing (noun) as something else.

Ex: Mrs. Eagan is a teacher. (She is “Mrs. Eagan and a teacher.)

You are a soccer player. (You are “you” and a soccer player.)

He is sad. (He is “him” and he is sad.)

Some linking verbs can be linking or action. (Forms of be are always linking.)

EX:

The cake looks good. Verb = look…….cake is being

linked to/described as “good” (tasty)

I looked at the cake. Verb = looked…..I am doing the

action of looking (at the cake)

The snack tastes salty. Verb = tastes…….snack is being

linked to/described as “salty”

Madison tasted the salty snack. Verb = tasted……..

….Madison is doing the action of tasting (the salty snack)
