SHIRAZ | |2002 KIRRIHILL ESTATES CLARE VALLEY SHIRAZ $44.95

REGION: CLARE VALLEY, SOUTH AUSTRALIA

Kirrihill Estates have produced a superb red from the exceptional 2002 vintage in the Clare Valle, one that represents outstanding value for money at below $20. Black, almost opaque colour; a lovely nose of plums, blackberries, spice and vanilla; a luscious palate loaded with black and red fruits, with beautifully judged oak treatment, fine-grained tannins and very long palate length. And to give you an idea of the quality and consistency of the label, every vintage of the Clare Valley Shiraz ('00, '01 and '02) has won at least two gold medals and the 2001 and 2002 vintages have been in the taste-off for the Jimmy Watson Trophy at the Melbourne.

"The grapes come from three growers and are sourced from the LK Vineyards, Tullymore Vineyards (on the rolling hills on the northern extension of the Lodge Hill Ridge - where one could be excused for imagining you were in the lower hills of Tuscany) and Bass Hill near Auburn. I seek harmony and multi-layered flavours in my wines and the influence of oak is an important part. We work hard on balancing barrel fermentation characters with ageing in new American and Seguin Moreau French barriques and a mix of one and two year old oak to keep the expression of Clare Shiraz in a modern manner." David Mavor, Senior Winemaker

"Lovely rich, concentrated wine, strong willed and packed with layers of flavours. Very enjoyable while young and developing well." Gold Medal, Liquorland's Top 100 International Wine Competition

"Abundant blackberry fruit; a big, powerful wine, slightly alcohol pushed; well-handled oak. Drink Now-2017." James Halliday - 90 points

"The excellent 2002 vintage is well reflected in this big, bold shiraz with its ripe blackberry and plum flavours infused with some smoky oak and sweet spice. There are plenty of other companies which would ask at least $30 for a wine of this quality – including more than a few in Victoria, let alone South Australia – which makes the asking price well inside bargain territory. A genuine lip- smacker." (((((() Paddy Kendler, Herald Sun

"Quite a black wine with ripe cherry and blackberry aromas and excellent oak treatment. A freshly picked berry palate balanced by excellent creamy/malty oak and soft, powdery tannins. 'A very good wine,' was the general consensus." (((((() Winestate Magazine

"Kirrihill continues to forge a reputation as a great winery. This super red, from the excellent 2002 vintage, has an excellent tannin structure and is just bursting with plum and blackberry flavours and underlying chocolate and spicy characters. Drink it with porterhouse steak." Illawarra Mercury

Drink Now to 2015.
